Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Assad Fudadin made thirties but Jermaine Blackwood fell cheaply, before Carter and Andre Fletcher revived the innings from 97 for 3. The pair put on an unbroken 86, with Carter on 69 and Fletcher on 36 at stumps.
Sri Lanka began the day on 248 for 6 and were dismissed for 299, a first-innings lead of 17. Dinesh Chandimal could add only one run to his overnight 43 before he became Devendra Bishoo's third victim. Carlos Brathwaite sent back the other overnight batsman Chaturanga de Silva for 36 to pick up his third wicket.
