pinpoint yorker, bowls him! Wood can't be out but the dot is good enough for Curran and Invincibles. He points to the umpire, the check is complete... Invincibles win by two runs!
Invincibles vs Spirit, 21st Match at London, Men's Hundred, Aug 15 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
9.33pm: Invincibles own the block with their second London derby win of the season, and they are now four points clear at the top of the table. But it was an incredible finish, Spirit falling one hit short of pulling off the joint-highest successful chase in the Hundred. There's still plenty to play for, with second to eighth separated by just one point. We'll be back for more tomorrow, cheerio until then. Bye!
9.28pm: Match Hero is Will Jacks for his 68 off 42 and two wickets: "Up and down, crazy finish, great game. Thought we'd won it twice, lucky to get over the line. When I came on to bowl I new I'd be under the pump. Try to be unpredictable, think how I would as a batter. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. [Batting] Was tough to start, they bowled well. There was a bit of zip in the surface and I had to fight through the first 20 balls, then was able to counterattack when the ball stopped swinging. Two games defending, they're massive for the team, knowing we can perform under pressure. Got to finish well and hopefully progress to the knockouts."
9.26pm: Matt Roller has this from the ground: "The ball deflected off the stumps, went to short third, Sowter ran all the way from deep square to field it and throw at non-striker's and break the stumps!" Doesn't look like Wood and Critchley tried to run at all. What a crazy finish!
And now the equation is three from one, but with Wood on strike for the free hit! Two will get them a tie (no super sets at this stage...)
full and wide, 85mph and swatted along the carpet to long-off! Curran holds his nerve... or does he? This is a front-foot no-ball! The TV umpire looks at it for an age, before Russell Warren signals to the crowd. Oval celebrations cut short, Curran will have to bowl this again
Breathless stuff! Critchley got back for two, but needs to hit another six off the last ball to win
boshed over the leg side, sailing all the way... until Whiteley Supermans into view to palm it back one-handed! Full length, in the air, fantastic work. Saves four runs, and possibly the W for his team
Eight from two
pace on, and dumped into the crowd! Critchley sets himself and mows a length ball off his pads over deep backward square leg. Spirit are alive!
nails his yorker, dug out for a scrambled two through mid-on
flung full, bunted down the ground
SCurran for the final set, 17 needed
slogged leg side, Sowter is running around, gets done by the bounce... and deep midwicket can't cut off either! Wood gets four, could yet be crucial
Chris Wood is in. Invincibles missed the cut-off at some point in the last few balls, only four men allowed out
another slower ball, picks out deep square leg! Dawson has to go for broke but swings the ball straight to Sowter, who pouches it safely
full and wide, 77mph and he mistimes a slog, inside-edged into his pads for one
similar length, pace off and again Critchley swings towards cow corner. Roy cuts this one off
hauled through wide long-on! Back of a length and he clubs it into the gap for four!
Ten balls to come from the Pavilion End. The cut-off is looming for Invincibles, though. Zak Chappell returns
dug in and Critchley pops the ball up behind square trying to pull, lands short of Johnson at short fine
fired across, 84mph towards the tramlines, Critchley can't connect again
goes wide cutter again, swing and a miss
Spirit brawling, 29 from 13
slower ball, mowed for a straight six this time! No doubt about this as Critchley slugs it back over the bowler
pumped down the ground, Jacks takes the catch... but steps over the rope! He was steadying himself to toss it back in, I think, but realised his foot had already touched the boundary marker
Curran again
Excellent set from Zampa, three runs and two wickets. Invincibles are closing in
clipped down the ground
Liam Dawson is in at No. 8
smashed down the ground, picks out long-on! Rocks back and almost connects too well with a cross-batted shot, it flew flat and hard, Roy winces after clinging on to his left. Lawrence covers his face but has to depart
pushed into the covers, Curran has a shy with Critchley struggling... but misses!
Matt Critchley walks in
steps across his stumps, Zampa rolls it out quick and straight, pins him in front! Just grips and turns past the bat as Mitchell mows across the line. Hit on the back leg and Kettleborough's finger goes straight up. Mitchell walks off without a thought of reviewing
pushed through straight and nurdled behind square
Zampa is back
