Jacques Kallis' fiery century helped Proteas register a comfortable win against Lions at Sedgars Park. Kallis was well supported by Hashim Amla, who also stroked a quick fifty. The win helped the South African team step up its training sessions with action in the middle, ahead of the Champions Trophy later this month.
Openers Jean Symes and Alviro Petersen gave Lions a strong start after they were put in. After their 69-run stand, Symes continued strongly and together with Dane Vilas was responsible for getting the score past 250. Symes was more patient during his 106-ball stay, striking eight fours, as opposed to Vilas, who smashed five boundaries and two sixes during his hurricane knock. Both were dismissed by Albie Morkel, who finished with four wickets.
Proteas' chase was off on the wrong foot with Herschelle Gibbs departing for 1, but that set the stage for Kallis and Amla. The second-wicket partnership effectively ended any hopes of a Lions victory, as both scored aggressively. While Kallis hit 16 fours during his breezy 92-ball innings, Amla struck eight boundaries as their team cantered home in the 38th over.
