Live blog - Coetzee, Bumrah run through Punjab Kings

It wasn't to be, folks. Rabada gets run out trying to search for a second run in the final over and Mumbai win by nine runs.

The No. 11 Kagiso Rabada pumps Hardik for six in the 19th to bring the equation down to a dozen off the final over. On most occasions, you back the batting team, but in this particular case you don't because they just have one wicket in hand.

Ashutosh looks devastated as he pulls the first ball of the 18th straight to deep midwicket. Coetzee is delighted as he takes a third.

It is a dream evening for Ashutosh. He reaches his fifty in 23 balls, and then scoops a free-hit over the keeper for six more. With seven sixes and two fours, Ashutosh has brought this game down to 34 in 25 balls.

The occasional boundary from Ashutosh is keeping the Kings in the hunt, but they need batters from both ends to score runs. That is not quite happening from Harpreet Brar, but the equation is still very much gettable as long as they don't get all out and Ashutosh stays in there.

Kings 137/7 in 14.4 overs with Mumbai looking to take the big-hitter out.

Shashank gone for 41, an entertaining innings amidst the Kings collapse. Hardik turned to his best bowler to break the partnership and he does it first ball of his new spell.

Jitesh Sharma disappoints too, out for 9. Madhwal bowled a full toss but the batter couldn't get bat on ball.

That brings together IPL 2024's favourite new pair, Shashank and Ashutosh.

Shashank has already thumped three sixes while Ashutosh walks in and pulls another.

Then proceeds to thump two more off Shepherd and Hardik in the 11th and 12th overs.

Kings lose half their side inside 7 overs. Shreyas Gopal, the legspinner who replaced Piyush Chawla in this set-up few games ago, takes a smart caught-and-bowled to send Harpreet Bhatia packing.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya has bowled the sixth over and now bowls the eighth too.

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse for the Kings, it does. Coetzee bangs one in short at 150kph, and Livingstone miscues a pull to the bowler's left. He won't drop that dolly and Punjab Kings are 14/4.

No mucking around tonight from Mumbai, when it comes to Jasprit Bumrah.

He shares the new ball tonight, and takes only four balls to strike. Gets a yorker to franchise debutant Rilee Rossouw leaving his stumps in a mess.

Strikes again off the last ball of the over - with Curran nicking him down the leg side. This time assisted by Ishan Kishan who convinced MI to review.

But he starts poorly. First ball smacked by Curran for four and the next delivery is five wides.

But Coetzee has a habit of returning strongly when he's under pressure with the ball. Gets a ball to get big on Prabhsimran, and his attempted pull is gloved to Kishan down the leg side. First-ball duck for Prabhsimran and Mumbai have struck already! 10/1 in 0.3 overs

No Dhawan, no problem. Last game Taide opened alongside Prabhsimran Singh. With Taide dropped for this game, it is the stand-in captain who takes strike. Akash Madhwal replaces SKY as the impact player.

Did Harshal miss out on a Tilak wicket? He mistimed a slog in the 20th over but it hit spidercam. Harshal was not happy with that.

But Harshal overall would be delighted with the 20th over. Collects two wickets of David and Shepherd, and also runs out the non-striker off the final ball. He bowled 12 slower balls today and finishes with a creditable 3 for 31.

Mumbai finish on 192 for 7 in 20 overs, scoring 77 in their last six overs. It is the highest first-innings IPL score at this venue, but somehow it felt that the Mumbai batters didn't maximise their time out in the middle.

Suryakumar did score 78 but it came at a strike rate of 147 so the Kings would not mind that one bit. Tilak, not out on 34 in 18 balls, gave some impetus, as did Hardik and David with their combined numbers of 24 in 13 balls. Suryakumar tells the broadcasters "it is way above par."

Harshal and Curran were the pick of the Kings bowlers, getting the important wickets through the innings. Arshdeep will be disappointed he wasn't trusted to complete his quota after conceding 35 in three overs. Rabada got the important wicket of Kishan, while five overs of spin from Livingstone and Brar came at an economy of 7.4.

Mumbai's big hitters are walking in now after Suryakumar's dismissal. Hardik makes 10 in 6 and falls to Harshal. But Tim David does better, drilling two fours and a six off his first four legal deliveries.

The Kings are most vulnerable at the death, having the worst economy rate among all ten teams, and it appears David will prove that right again tonight.

Curran concedes 18 in his final over. Mumbai 185/4 in 19 overs

Kagiso Rabada went for only 24 in three overs. But the 16th turns out to be a bad one. Suryakumar hits him for four and six, the latter off a full toss, and Tilak pulls him for six.

A total of 18 conceded with four overs left.

However, Suryakumar will get to enjoy the death overs. Slices Curran and falls to backward point for 78 in 53 balls.

Interestingly, this was only the second IPL innings for Suryakumar where he faced 50+ balls. Mumbai Indians 148/3 in 16.2 overs

Is this Suryakumar laying down the gauntlet alongside Tilak?

Tilak swats Arshdeep over his head for four first. Then Suryakumar converts a full ball into a full toss by running down and hitting a four through cover. Repeats another loft over cover to end the over and Arshdeep leaks 15.

That is rare when Mumbai Indians are batting and more so when Suryakumar Yadav is batting on 50+. Here's how the 12th, 13th and 14th overs have gone:

On dropping Bairstow, whether it was player-led like Maxwell sitting out at RCB: No that was our call, we just had to change things up, it was that time in the competition. We needed to do something a little bit better. We have probably overall - he is not the only one - we have sort of failed to get us enough runs up front. Just a little bit of a change to try and invigorate things.

How long a run do players get? Jonny over at the right shoulder here thinks he probably could have gone a bit longer. It is a difficult one, we all want to try and give guys as much opportunity as we can, but the situation we find ourselves in, we had to make a bit of a change. A couple of guys missing out at the top of the order from this game. But it's not necessarily the end for those guys. We know they are quality players.

One ball after receiving a concussion check, Rohit falls to point in the 12th over as Curran bowls a 108kph slower ball.

Rohit had faced only 13 balls in the last seven overs before his dismissal and was starved of strike heavily. Did that have a role to play? Gone for 36 in 25 balls and Mumbai Indians are 101 for 2 in 12 overs

After conceding 54 in the powerplay, Kings concede only 42 more in the next five overs. Even though they haven't been able to dismiss either Rohit or Suryakumar, they haven't let either get away (according to their usual standards).

Curran has used his bowlers well, giving everyone short spells to keep the batters on their toes. All six bowlers have delivered two overs each.

On the topic of Rohit, he recently said he's not a fan of the impact player rule, based on how it affects the development of allrounders like Washington and Shivam Dube. Where do you stand?

Interestingly, Rohit had said he loved the idea when asked about it in MI's first press conference from the IPL 2023 season.

Mumbai's powerplay run rate of 9 tonight is significantly higher than Mullanpur's average powerplay run rate(7.3) but significantly lower than their own powerplay run-rate for the season (~10.5) coming into the game.

The Kings have done well to not let a team with a top three of Rohit, Kishan and Suryakumar get away. MI 54/1 in six.

Harshal Patel bowls a terrific slower-ball yorker to Rohit and gets him LBW according to the umpire.

Rohit looks defeated, but after a chat with SKY, he takes a very late and half-hearted review.

And isn't he glad he did that? Ball missing leg and Rohit gives out an expressive fist-bump upon knowing he has survived. Massive moment in the game given how tentative and late the review.

But Rohit has to be careful against Harshal. Harshal has dismissed him three times in six T20s (in only 27 balls) - a semi-bunny, if you'd like.

In his last five innings, Suryakumar Yadav's scores are 56, 100, 0, 52, 0.

Bad is sometimes good. Rabada starts the third over with a short and wide ball, but Kishan has found the man at deep backward point. Credit to the Kings for keeping the fielder there, but Rabada's delivery would've cleared the man for six on most occasions.

This time it doesn't, and Rabada reaches a landmark: 250 T20 wickets! Kishan makes eight in eight balls.

Speaking of Rabada, he has been on a solid run in IPL 2024. He has made his best start to an IPL season in terms of wicket-taking since his IPL 2020 Purple Cap winning season, picking up 10 wickets in 7* games so far. He also has an economy of 6.59 against right-hand batters in IPL 2024, but I doubt that particular stat matters much since Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav are outliers when it comes to batters.

Left-hand batter Ishan Kishan takes strike, and Curran throws the ball to Liam Livingstone. Kishan faces four balls in all, scoring only two, but Rohit manages to clatter a four to end the over and give Mumbai 6/0 in one over.

Livingstone nearly bowled the perfect first over with only two runs in five balls. But as they say, it doesn't matter how you start, only how you finish. Still, Punjab and he would take six against this pair.

From the other end, Arshdeep Singh. He has a terrific record against Kishan, dismissing the batter three times in 12 balls in T20s, across four innings. He has stifled Rohit with a strike-rate of only 106. Concedes two boundaries in an 11-run over where he may feel a bit unlucky.

These two have three fifty partnerships and one century stand in six innings. But Mullanpur has been a sluggish surface, with the lowest powerplay run-rate (7.3) among all venues in IPL 2024. In fact, it is nearly two runs less than the tournament average for the first six overs.

The Punjab Kings captain is out with a shoulder niggle, so Sam Curran will continue leading. Wins the toss and says he wants to put pressure with the ball early. Big news is Rilee Rossouw replaces out-of-form Jonny Bairstow. They have uncapped batters Shivam Singh and Harpreet Bhatia on the bench, alongside big-hitter Rishi Dhawan.

My colleague Matt Roller chips in about Bairstow: "Only two 50s across formats during a long winter in India for him - the only England player involved in all three of the World Cup, Test series and IPL."

Hardik Pandya says he wants his whole group to step up, not only individuals. They'll bat first with no changes.
