Live Report - Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians, Ahmedabad

By Hemant Brar

Mohit 5 for 10, Titans into final

Mohit hadn’t bowled till the 14th over, which meant he was never going to bowl his four. It turns it, he didn't need to. Using his slower balls, he finishes with figures of 2.2-0-10-5. Mumbai fall short by 62. It couldn't have been a more convincing win for Titans. They are in the finals and will have a chance to defend their title, against Chennai Super Kings at this very venue on Sunday.
That's all from my side for this game. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. See you soon.

Rashid traps David. Is that the game?

Mumbai were in need of quick runs but Titans, as always, had saved Rashid's one over. Hardik brought him on in the 16th over and with his third ball, he trapped David. The batter reviewed the lbw decision but he couldn't have been more out.
Mohit's slower one then accounts for Jordan, leaving Mumbai 161 for 8.

Mohit snares Surya

With Vinod struggling, Surya was keeping Mumbai in the contest almost singlehandedly. He had reached 61 off 37. With Mumbai needing k79 off 34, he tried to scoop Mohit Sharma but the ball was slightly fuller than he expected and it took out his leg stump.
Two balls later, Mohit sends back Vinod as well.
MI 156 for 6 after 15. They need 78 from the last five.

SKY vs Rashid

Coming into this game, Suryakumar had scored 67 runs in 47 balls off Rashid in T20s, without ever being dismissed. He has taken that up to 86 off 58 now.
That took MI to 110 for 3 after ten overs, needing another 124 in the last ten. Green too was looking dangerous but Little bowled him with the one that seamed in to dent Mumbai.
Vishnu Vinod, the concussion sub, walks in at No. 6.
MI 128 for 4 after 12. They need 106 more in eight overs.

Rashid castles Varma

Varma had moved to 43 off just 13 with 100% control. But Rashid has bowled him to give Titans some relief. Mumbai's method of dealing with Rashid is to sweep him. Varma tries to do the same but misses a straight ball.
Green comes out to resume his innings.

Vishnu Vinod the concussion sub for Kishan

So, it seems that the elbow blow to Kishan's eye has resulted in a concussion. Vishnu Vinod has replaced him. Green too is padded up in the dugout.
Meanwhile, Varma has hit two sixes in his first four balls.

21 for 2, or 21 for 4?

Shami strikes again, snaring Rohit Sharma on the pull this time. That leaves Mumbai 21 for 2. Or is it 21 for 4 effectively? I am not sure if Kishan and Green will come out to bat. Tilak Varma is the new batter.

Green retired hurt after getting hit on forearm

A short ball from Hardik Pandya that followed Green who was backing away. Green tried to fend, taking his eyes off, and was hit on the left forearm. He wasn't wearing an arm guard, and looks in some pain. The physio is out and has put a tape on his forearm. Green tries to hold the bat but doesn't look fully comfortable. And he is walking off. Retired hurt.
Suryakumar Yadav sprints out, and gets off the mark with a four.
MI 21 for 1 after two. Not sure how likely Kishan and Green are to bat.

Shami's first wicket vs MI for Titans

Before tonight, Shami had played three games against Mumbai for Titans. He was wicketless in all three of those. But here he was struck in his very first over. Wadhera had hit the previous ball over cover for four. This time he went for a pull only to edge it behind.
No. 3 Green starts with a first-ball four.

Impact Player Wadhera to open

With Kishan still out, Nehal Wadhera walks in to open the innings with Rohit Sharma. Titans too have brought in their Impact Player - Josh Little for Shubman Gill.

How much did the David drop cost?

S Rajesh: Luck Index reckons the cost of dropping Shubman Gill is 23 runs. Gill was on 30 off 19 when Tim David dropped him. Gill scored 99 off the next 41 balls, including the ball off which he was dropped. According to Luck Index, the other batters would have scored 76 off those 40 balls.

Hardik finishes off in style

It looked like Mumbai might pull it back somewhat. The 18th and 19th overs combined went for just 16. But after Rashid's four down the ground, Hardik hit the last two balls of Jordan's over for four and six. The four, though, came off an outside edge.
Titans have put up a mammoth 233 for 3. If Mumbai are to qualify for the final, they will have to nail down the biggest chase in the IPL history. The previous biggest is 224 by Rajasthan Royals against then Kings XI Punjab in the Tewatia game.

Titans have retired out Sudharsan

Sudharsan was on 43 off 31 balls at the end of the 19th over, and Titans decided it was time to retire out him. Rashid Khan replaced him. Before this game, Rashid had hit 13 sixes in 56 balls in this IPL - the lowest balls-per-sixes ratio for anyone to have faced 25-plus balls. Last time these two sides met, Rashid smoked ten sixes. Another reason could be that the shorter boundary is on the right-hand batter's leg side.
Rashid starts with a straight boundary followed by a snake shot, which fetches only a single though.

Gill falls for 129

Gill's majestic innings comes to an end on 129. During his 60-ball stay at the crease, he hit ten sixes and seven fours. The knock took Gill's tally to 851. Only Kohli (973 in 2016) and Buttler (863 in 2022) have had more productive seasons.
Behrendorff concedes just seven in the 18th over. Titans 205 for 2.

Should GT retire Sai Sudharsan?

As I was typing this, Sudharsan responds with back-to-back fours off Jordan. Gill is on 123* now - the highest score in IPL playoffs.
PS: Kishan is walking back with a hand on his eye. As he and Jordan were walking past each other, Jordan's elbow hit Kishan in the face. Vishnu Vinod has substituted Kishan behind the stumps.

This is carnage!

Green comes on to bowl the 15th over and Gill goes 6, 4, 6. The first of those hits was off a slower ball. It was in the slot and Gill smashed it straight over the bowler's head. Green shortened his length for the next delivery and Gill pulled him to the right of deep midwicket. Green stuck to the shorter length. Gill came out of his crease and despite not being in a perfect position, forehanded it over deep midwicket, the longest boundary tonight.
Shiva Jayaraman tells me that Gill is the second batter after Michael Klinger to score three hundreds in four T20 innings.

Gill's third hundred of the season

A single off Green and Gill has his third hundred of the season, off 49 balls. Only Virat Kohli and Jos Buttler have had more (four each) in an IPL season. And don't forget, Gill had a 94* too.

Gill goes sixy

In his last two overs, Gill has hit five sixes - three off Madhwal, two off Chawla. There was one four too off the legspinner. And all of a sudden, he is on 98, off 47 balls. During this passage, he has brought up 800 runs for the season, 500 of those coming at this venue. He is now fourth on the all-time list of most runs in a season. What a season he is having!

Gill in full flow

Chawla might have struck in his first over for the sixth time this season, but Gill is at the peak of his powers. In the legspinner's next over, he jumps out of his crease and hits him for a straight six. In the next over, he brings up his fifty, off 32 balls, before slogging Kumar Kartikeya over deep square leg for his third six of the innings. That's the shorter side as well.

Chawla sends back Saha

Piyush Chawla has been the man with a golden arm for Mumbai this season. And he does it once again, by getting Saha stumped in his very first over. Saha came out of his crease but ran past a delivery that was sliding down the leg side. In fact, it was called a wide. Good glovework by Kishan behind the stumps, though.
Sai Sudharsan is the new batter.

Gill provides the impetus

Despite hitting at least one four in each over from the second to fifth, Titans were 38 for no loss after five. Chris Jordan bowled the last over of the powerplay and Gill latched onto him. The second legal delivery of the over was too short on this sticky pitch. Gill waited for it and pulled it with disdain over deep square leg. The next one was just short outside off. Gill once again showed no mercy and cut it ferociously to the cover boundary.
On the fifth ball, Tim David drops a tough chance at mid-on. Gill half-punched it to David's right who dived full length, got both hands to it but the ball popped out.

Madhwal pings Saha on the helmet

Madhwal isn't tall but he is skiddy and bowls at a good pace. With his fifth ball of the match, he pings Saha on the helmet with the batter looking to pull the short ball. The ball hit Saha on the side of the helmet as he swivelled. The physio is out, and Saha is okay to resume.
How does Saha respond? Skips down the track next ball and slashes it over cover-point for four.

Mumbai opt to bowl; Little returns for Titans

Mumbai Indians have won the toss and they want to chase. That has been their strength as well.
"There is a bit of weather around, and the pitch looks a bit sticky," says Rohit Sharma. "As the game goes on, the pitch will get better and better. But more than anything, it's our comfort zone. But again, it changes from condition to condition, like we wanted to bat first in Chennai. Just one change from the last game. Hrithik Shokeen goes out, Kumar Kartikeya comes in."
"We would have bowled first as well," says Hardik Pandya. "But it's okay. We all have seen no matter how the group stage goes, qualifiers are fun. Within the group, we had a chat that if we give out 100%, we will be satisfied irrespective of the result. Yeah, at full throttle [on if he will be bowling tonight]. We have got two changes: Josh Little comes in place of Shanaka and Sai Sudharsan comes in for Darshan Nalkande."
Here are the XIs:
Gujarat Titans: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 David Miller, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Noor Ahmad, 10 Mohit Sharma, 11 Mohammed Shami
Substitutes: Josh Little, KS Bharat, Odean Smith, R Sai Kishore, Shivam Mavi
Mumbai Indians: 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Cameron Green, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Tim David, 7 Chris Jordan, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Jason Behrendorff, 10 Akash Madhwal, 11 Kumar Kartikeya

Pitch report

We have seen some big totals being posted at this venue but Matthew Hayden reckons tonight's pitch is different. It's a "170 wicket, at best 180," he says. The square boundaries are 63 and 68 metres. Down the ground, it's 74 metres. The biggest pocket is the one at deep midwicket from this end: 75 metres.
Meanwhile, Shashank says that a dark cloud has just shown up and it's beginning to get drizzly.

Hardik is charged up

Hardik Pandya is giving his players a pep talk in the huddle, and I don't think I have seen a more animated pep talk.
Hardik has marked his run-up as well. He didn't bowl in the previous four games but does this mean he will roll his arm over tonight? Or is it just part of mind games?

Good news

"The rain has reduced," says Shashank. "Massive puddles of water on the outfield to mop up. A Supper Sopper has made its way out."
Does the rain mean that dew goes out of the picture? The rain has stopped but the toss has been delayed. The umpires will inspect the ground at 7.20pm.
PS: The stumps have been put back in. The players are out to train as well.

Rain scenarios

Here are the different scenarios depending on how long it takes to start the game.
  • The match can start as late as 9.40pm without any overs being lost.
  • The latest that a five-overs-per-side match can start is 11.56pm.
  • If even five overs are not possible, the teams will compete in a Super Over.
  • If that's also not possible, the team that finished higher in the league stage will be declared the winner. In this case, it will be Gujarat Titans.
Meanwhile, the ground staff have retreated to their room beside the sightscreen. Sheets of lightning and thunder, adds Shashank.

Rain in the air!

Shashank Kishore is at the venue and he says, "There's a thin drizzle and the covers are coming on." A minute or two later, he adds, "It's absolutely hosing down." Hope it's just a passing shower.
