As it happened: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2022, Wankhede stadium, Mumbai

By Deivarayan Muthu

RCB seal 67-run victory

Bhuvneshwar is the last batter to be dismissed and quite fittingly it is du Plessis who takes the catch. RCB seal a net-run-rate boosting victory and consolidate their fourth spot. Plenty to ponder for SRH.

Tripathi goes and with it SRH's chances?

Hazlewood hits a heavy length and has Tripathi splicing a pull to deep square leg for 58 off 37 balls. SRH need a further 79 off 26 balls with just four wickets in hand. RCB are 99% favourites to seal this

Hasaranga's double-strike

Hasaranga has Markram holing out for 21 off 27 balls, he returns to the attack and takes out Pooran too. He hides a wrong'un away from the left-hander and has him slicing a catch to short third man. SRH are 89 for 4 in the 13th over, RCB are 96% favourites to win this

Williamson, Abhishek also bag ducks

The SRH captain is out without having faced a ball. Shahbaz Ahmed effects a direct hit and by the time the bails come off, Williamson's bat is on the line. Four balls later, Maxwell castles Abhishek with a slider to leave SRH at 1 for 2. Markram-Pooran or bust for SRH?

How costly was Tripathi's drop of Karthik?

Shiva Jayaraman: ESPNcricinfo's Luck Index reckons that Dinesh Karthik's reprieve by Rahul Tripathi on the third ball of the last over cost Sunrisers Hyderabad 14 runs in the end. The algorithm estimates that the batters to follow would have managed eight off the three balls left in the innings had Karthik been out. This estimation is done by the algorithm by allocating balls Karthik faced after he was dropped to batters left to bat. Karthik scored 22 off the last four balls including the six off the ball he was dropped. Sunrisers would have been chasing 179 instead of 193 had that catch been held.

Another Karthik cameo lifts RCB

Karthik goes 6,6,6,4 to finish the innings in grand fashion. RCB have surged to 192 for 3. The target could've been fewer had SRH held onto their catches. The second ball in that boundary sequence flew to Tripathi at the midwicket boundary, but he let it burst through his hands, with the ball ultimately landing on the cushions.

Man down

Farooqi tumbles in his followthrough and clutches his right calf after missing a yorker and conceding a sliced four to du Plessis. The SRH physio is out to tend to him, which results in a hold-up in play. Perhaps, it is just cramps and Farooqi is ready to resume.
The next ball - a slower cutter - is belted into the right leg once again. The physio is out once again. Williamson has a wry smile on his face.

No fifty for Patidar

du Plessis has progressed to a half-century, but Patidar falls two short of the milestone, Suchith holing out to deep midwicket. RCB are 105 for 2 in the 13th over. Projected total: 184. It's on. Maxwell announces himself with a huuuuuuge switch-hit six.

SRH forced to dig deep

Tyagi and Malik leak 17 and 20 respectively in their first overs. It forces Williamson to look for some overs from the sixth bowler Abishek Sharma. Advantage RCB. Sunrisers are missing the control and experience that Natarajan provides them during this phase.

Faf's hands give RCB a leg-up

Faf du Plessis has relied on the hands-only technique throughout his career, and it comes to the fore during the first over of Umran Malik. He backs away to a 145kph hard-length delivery, but makes sure his hands reach the ball wide outside off and belt it away straight of mid-off.
Speaking to his former opening partner at the Super Kings and good friend Shane Watson on the T20 Stars podcast, du Plessis revealed that almost every coach tried to push him away from his usual technique, saying his hands were too far from his body. During his first season at the Super Kings in 2011, even Steve Rixon pointed out the same, telling du Plessis he'd "struggle to hit through the off side".
He continues to back his methods and continues to scorch the ball through the off side.
Malik produces an airy hoick next ball, but Tripathi can't hang onto the difficult chance at midwicket. What happens next ball? Sails over wide long-on for another six. RCB progress to 77 for 1 in eight overs.

Patidar, du Plessis bed in

Farooqi starts his IPL career with a 142kph dart, then finds some grip in the pitch, so he cuts it down to 100kph. Some of these balls are sticking up in the Wankhede pitch, especially if you explore the middle of it.
On such a surface, Patidar, promoted to No.3, has bedded in, claiming 23 of the 47 RCB have made in the powerplay. He made everyone sit up and take notice of him when he swatted a Bhuvneshwar legcutter for six off the front foot. du Plessis takes a liking to Tyagi's extra pace and hits him for six and a four in the last over of the powerplay.
Patidar turns up the tempo further in the next over when he jumps back and pounds Suchith for another six.

Kohli bags another golden duck

Kohli bags a second golden duck against SRH and third overall this season. This is an innocuous non-turning full ball on the pads from Suchith. Kohli closes the bat-face and simply chips it into the hands of Williamson at short midwicket. It has been that kind of a season for Kohli. He has a wry smile on his face as he drags himself off the field. Williamson sneaks in a two-run first over from Suchith to go with the scalp of Kohli.

Williamson finally loses a toss; RCB opt to bat

This is only the second toss Williamson has lost in 11 attempts this season. "Nice to steal a toss from Kane today," says du Plessis. RCB have turned up in their green jersey for this fixture. They are unchanged.
Williamson suggests that they won't tweak their batting order. Sunrisers make two changes with left-arm fingerspinner J Suchith and Afghanistan left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi replacing Shreyas Gopal and Sean Abbott. This is Farooqi's first IPL game, but du Plessis might be familiar with him, having faced him at the CSK nets when he was a support player last season.
Farooqi hails from the Baghlan province and played for Afghanistan Under-19s before breaking into the senior team more recently. He idolises Mitchell Starc, Mohammad Amir and Zaheer Khan. He has a good inswinger in his repertoire and can bowl at sharp pace. So, we have another Afghanistan player starting his IPL career at SRH.
SRH: 1 Kane Williamson (capt), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Jagadeesha Suchith, 8 Kartik Tyagi 9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Umran Malik, 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi
RCB: 1 Faf du Plessis (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Mahipal Lomror, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Shahbaz Ahmed, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Teams scramble for playoffs

After racking up five successive victories, Sunrisers Hyderabad have gone off the boil, losing three games in a row and losing Natarajan and Washington to injuries. With the race for the playoffs heating up, they can't afford another slip-up today, against Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have moved back to the top four after snapping their own losing streak. The spotlight will be on Williamson and Kohli who are both struggling to find a higher gear this IPL.
