As it happened: Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, Pune

By Karthik Krishnaswamy

Mumbai run out of steam

They run out of steam, and they run out of batters. Briefly, though, it looked as if Jaydev Unadkat might be able to take them over the line. With 22 needed off six, he hit the first ball of the final over for a pulled six right out of the meat of the bat, but his dismissal off the third ball all but killed Mumbai's chances. Odean finishes with a nine-run, triple-wicket over, and PBKS wrap up victory by 12 runs.
It's a third win in five games for PBKS, and a particularly creditable one for losing the toss and having to defend a total. Their batting intent, despite a middle-overs slowdown triggered by a pinpoint Jasprit Bumrah yorker to Liam Livingstone, took them to 198. Mumbai will feel they could have chased it down, even with their abbreviated batting, and they'll be particularly livid at themselves for losing two wickets to run-outs. They could have won this, but they didn't, and now they're winless after five matches. A dire, dire position to be in.

Final nail?

Given the mounting required rate and the lack of a recognised batter at the other end, this was bound to happen. Has to go for the big hit with 22 needed off nine balls, and that isn't easy to do off a low full-toss from Kagiso Rabada. Holes out to long-on.
Mumbai now need 22 off eight balls with Unadkat and M Ashwin at the crease.
Update: Rabada closes out the 19th over with two dots. Mumbai need 22 off the last over, with Odean Smith to bowl. Is there still room for a Tewatia-esque twist?

Arshdeep Singh

4.33 Arshdeep Singh's death-overs economy rate this season
His final over, the 18th, goes for just five runs. A mix of stump-to-stump yorkers and wide yorkers from left-arm around, and Unadkat was on strike for four of the six balls.
Mumbai need 28 off 12.

The hands of the SKY

Glenn Maxwell has amazingly quick hands, and he can whip or slice the ball to find unpredictable angles and get elevation when you wouldn't think it possible.
Suryakumar Yadav's hands aren't dissimilar, and he's hit two glorious, back-to-back sixes over the off side off Vaibhav Arora, the second one sliced over backward point. Sixteen off the 17th over, and Mumbai need 33 from 18 balls.

Another run-out

Completely needless second run here. Pollard was only jogging the first, but seeing Suryakumar turn and sprint to what is ostensibly the danger end, he also goes for the second. He's never going to make it because he's run the first run so slow, and Odean Smith at long-on sees this and throws to the correct end, after his misfield prompts the second run in the first place.
Two wickets lost to run-outs - it should never happen in T20. Mumbai are 152 for 5 in 16.1 overs, and Jaydev Unadkat is their No. 7.

Three quiet overs

Mumbai are taking it deep here, almost out of necessity. Only 19 runs off overs 14, 15 and 16, and just the two boundary hits. They now need 49 off the last 24 balls.
Their win probability is 28.25%.

Mix-up

Time and again, batters are out going for quick singles in T20. So much risk for so little reward. And in this particular match, when Mumbai's batting after No. 6 is... iffy to say the least, it looks really, really, really silly.
In this case, Suryakumar clips the ball into the leg side, and Tilak takes off rashly from his end without making sure his partner is on the same wavelength. Sent back, he turns around too late, and has no chance of getting back home.
Tilak is out for 36 off 20. Mumbai end the over at 131 for 4. They need 68 from 42, which is very much achievable, but if either Suryakumar or Kieron Pollard is out soon, there's very little batting to come.

Odean gets Brevis

That's the two overs after Brevis' assault on Chahar. Mumbai have rattled along, with some terrific shots from Tilak Varma in particular - a scoop-pull over short fine leg for six off Vaibhav Arora, a slash over backward point for another six off Odean Smith. They've also enjoyed some luck, with a couple of edges flying to the boundary, including a chance that Brevis offered at deep third.
Then something eventually goes PBKS's way, as Brevis plays a cramped pull off Odean that ends up in the hands of deep square leg. Mumbai are three down, and they need 83 off 54 balls.
Brevis is out for 49 off 25. Here's a photo that conveys something of his still head and unfettered bat-swing.

How is Dewald Brevis doing what he's doing when he's still more than two weeks from his 19th birthday, when I'm doing whatever I am at my advanced age?
Pretty sure I'm not the only one asking myself that right now.
He's on 44 of 21 now, and Mumbai are 92 for 2 after nine overs. This match is on.

Mumbai hold back Suryakumar

My guess is that since they don't bat deep today, they'd rather have the two youngsters in Brevis and Tilak Yadav batting when it's still just two down, when they still have the experience of Suryakumar and Pollard to come behind them. Tilak plays two cuts in the eighth over against Liam Livingstone, one edged and one middled, and both go for four. Mumbai are 63 for 2, and need 136 off 72 balls.

New-ball movement

Both Arora and Arshdeep Singh have got the ball to move around in the powerplay. There's a bit of it even in the sixth over, and Arshdeep beats Brevis' outside edge before the young South African batter hits back with back-to-back fours. Mumbai are 42 for 2 after the powerplay.

Two down

Vaibhav Arora bowls a beauty to Ishan Kishan in the fifth over. Over the wicket, good length, and the ball leaving the left-hander off the pitch. Something like a Test-match wobble-seam ball, and Kishan nicks off. Mumbai are 31 for 2 in 4.2 overs. Big, big strike. They don't bat deep today, remember.

Six and out

Rohit hits an astonishing six off Kagiso Rabada in the fourth over, clearing his front leg and launching the ball over the covers. That also moves him past 10,000 runs in T20 cricket. But the next ball, he miscues a pull off a short ball that cramps him for room, and Mumbai are 31 for 1 in 3.5 overs.
Dewald Brevis is in at No. 3.

Are batters playing Bumrah differently?

Shiva Jayaraman certainly thinks so:
Jasprit Bumrah had taken just three wickets this season before today, and all those wickets had come in the second match of the season against Rajasthan Royals. Bumrah averages 36.25 in the season and among 24 bowlers who’ve bowled at least 16 overs so far in the season, Bumrah’s average ranks 19th. He did bowl well in this match, striking at the right time to dismiss the dangerous Liam Livingstone. However, Bumrah hasn’t been as successful a strike bowler so far in this season as he has been in the past.
One possible reason for this could be that batters are choosing the right balls to attack Bumrah. Compared to the entire last season, batters are playing fewer aggressive shots against Bumrah: according to the data with ESPNcricinfo, in this season batters have attempted aggressive shots to 25.4% of balls by him compared with 35% last year. However, the big difference is in how these aggressive shots have been both significantly more productive and less risky this season.
Batters have been in control of 82.1% of the aggressive shots they’ve played against Bumrah this year. This percentage was 61% last year, and resulted in 10 wickets. Bumrah hasn’t struck so far this season when batters are attacking him. Bumrah conceded runs at an economy off 13.6 to these aggressive strikes from the batters last year. This year, he’s conceding runs at 19 per over to these shots. In contrast, there’s hardly any difference in his numbers when batters are not attempting aggressive shots against him: his economy is 4.31 this season (v 4.09 last season) and average is 14.75 (v 13.27 last season).

All eyes on Rohit Sharma

We're certainly seeing a different Rohit in this innings. Two attempted lap-sweeps in the very first over, against the fast bowler Vaibhav Arora. One is edged over the keeper for four, and the other is middled for six. Mumbai 12 for no loss after one over.

Terrible pun, but the man can sure hit them. Give him half a chance to hit down the ground, and you'd back him to clear the rope. A couple of wides too, from Basil Thampi, which is another benefit that a big hitter brings - the bowler's always trying really hard to keep the ball away from the batter's reach.
Thampi bowls him off the fourth legal ball of the final over, a near-yorker dragged onto the stumps off the inside edge, but Shahrukh's done his job, scoring 15 off 6.
Sixteen off the final over in the end, and PBKS finish with 198 for 5. An interesting innings. You might have backed them to get 10 runs more than that, given the start they had, but they haven't finished too badly either, given that Mumbai pulled things back pretty well, with Bumrah doing an especially fine job.
199 isn't out of Mumbai's reach, but they're only playing six batters today, remember, including their keeper.

Jitesh Sharma has taken down Jaydev Unadkat in the 18th over, and PBKS are 174 for 4. Two especially stunning shots in that over: a drive over extra-cover with his back knee on the ground, which went all the way for six, and a shuffling reverse-scoop over short third off the last ball. Stunning.

Mumbai's fightback

The ball before Mayank Agarwal was dismissed, ESPNcricinfo's forecaster had pegged PBKS' expected total at 195. By the end of the 17th over, it has dipped to 182.
Dhawan falls off the last ball of the over, going big but failing to make the desired connection off Basil Thampi and holing out to long-on. He's out for 70 off 50 and PBKS are 151 for 4.

Bumrahed

It should be a verb. Bumrah has just Bumrahed Livingstone here, bowling him with a searing yorker that he's played all around. Not too many others can create this much of an impact on a match, potentially, with one ball. PBKS are 130 for 3 in 14.3 overs.

Unadkat gets big wicket

Bowls the slower cutter, lands it just short of a length, and Bairstow drags an attempted leg-side swipe onto his stumps off the inside edge.
PBKS 127 for 2 in 13.5 overs. Perfect entry point for Liam Livingstone?

50 off 37

Dhawan's beginning to get a move on as well. He was on 20 off 18 at one point, but he's scored 30 off 19 since then, including a cheeky scoop over short fine leg off Unadkat just before going past the milestone in the 14th over.

Shot of the innings?

Dhawan had already registered one entry for that competition, when he stepped out and lofted Jaydev Unadkat for an effortless six over long-off in the second over. But this might be an even better shot. Well-directed bouncer from Jasprit Bumrah in the 11th over, angling in from round the wicket and denying him any room, but he leans back, watches the ball onto his bat, and uses the pace expertly to ramp it over the keeper.
PBKS are 106 for 1 after 11 overs. Dhawan is on 41 off 30.

MAsh gets Agarwal

M Ashwin could have had Shikhar Dhawan earlier in the over, when he flicked him in the air and Dewald Brevis, sprinting and diving to his right, parried the ball over the rope for six. Then Agarwal takes on a ball that isn't quite full enough to loft down the ground - he'd hit a similar ball for six earlier, but he doesn't quite get hold of this one, hitting it high in the air for long-off to catch after running in a little bit from the boundary, and to his right. He's out for 52 off 32, and PBKS are 97 for 1 in 9.3 overs.
Jonny Bairstow is in at No. 3.

Fifty

First of the season for Agarwal. Brings it up with a super shot too. Picks Tymal Mills' slower ball early, clears his front leg, and launches it cleanly over the long-off boundary. Brings up the landmark off 30 balls.

Three successive hits to or over the boundary in the fifth over, and the most impressive one, for me, was the last one. He'd just hit two crisp fours, and Murugan Ashwin floated one slower and landed it on a length, turning away from his hitting arc. He had long-off back as well, but Agarwal backed himself to clear the fielder and did it.
No half measures, no sense of the batter thinking "I've already hit two fours, let me coast through the rest of this over."

What is form?

Mayank Agarwal's scores this season have been 32, 1, 4 and 5, but you can't say he's been in poor form. He's come out looking to attack from the start in every innings, and he's gotten out early three times in that attempt.
He got a couple of short, wide hit-me balls in the first over today, from Basil Thampi, and now Jasprit Bumrah's fed him a wide and slightly overpitched ball that he's driven hard to just elude the jumping cover point fielder. He's moved to 14 off 10, and PBKS are 30 for no loss after three overs.

Mumbai bowl, Mills returns

Rohit Sharma wins the toss. Just the second time it's happened for Mumbai this season.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, lose their fourth toss in five games.
No surprises as to what the toss decision is.
Tymal Mills is back, as Nagraj predicted. Ramandeep Singh is out. Still just the three overseas players for Mumbai.
Punjab are unchanged.
Interesting selection from Mumbai. A fast bowler for a batting allrounder - they've really compromised on their batting depth today. There's potentially some early help to be had with the new ball; Mumbai will hope they can exploit that and limit the target they'll potentially have to chase today.
Punjab Kings: 1 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Jitesh Sharma, 6 Shahrukh Khan, 7 Odean Smith, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Vaibhav Arora, 11 Arshdeep Singh.
Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Dewald Brevis, 5 Lalit Yadav, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 M Ashwin, 8 Jaydev Unadkat, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Tymal Mills, 11 Basil Thampi.

The last winless team

Sunrisers Hyderabad have picked up their first points of the season. So have Chennai Super Kings.
Mumbai Indians, though, are still rock-bottom. Played four, lost four. Can they break their duck today? They face the ultra-aggressive Punjab Kings, who have won two of their four games so far. The venue is Pune, and the toss is just over 20 minutes.
Selection is one thing we'll all have an eye on in the lead-up to the toss, given that Mumbai fielded only two overseas players in their last game. How will they go today? Well, Nagraj Gollapudi is at the ground, and he's seen a few clues:
"Even before PBKS have stepped into the ground, Tymal Mills has started marking his run-up. Proabably safe to count him in. Dewald Brevis, not Tim David, is taking throwdowns, so the mystery carries on over the latter's absence."
