As it happened: Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

By Alagappan Muthu

Capitals out, RCB in playoffs

Mumbai Indians 160 for 5 (Kishan 48, David 34, Thakur 2-32) beat Delhi Capitals 159 for 7 (Powell 43, Bumrah 3-25) by five wickets
Ten balls. That's all it took. Ten balls of carnage to end Delhi Capitals' season and thrust Royal Challengers Bangalore into the playoffs.
Tim David would have been out for 0 had they opted to review a caught behind decision in the 15th over when the equation was 65 off 33.
Instead he got to face 10 more balls and score 34 heartbreaking runs to punish Rishabh Pant and his men for an error that will haunt them for what will feel like forever.

Chance missed

David, who is 11 off 5 now, on a pitch where Rohit scored only 2 off 13, should have been out for a duck in the 15th over.
He was done by a lovely length ball, nipping away from him, from Thakur, and though the Capitals appealed, they didn't opt for the review. Pant had a long chat with the bowler before ruling against it. Then when the replays revealed a spike on UltraEdge everyone began fuming. Pant on the field, Ponting in the dugout

Capitals hanging on

Capitals have been holding on by the skin of their teeth to this game.
At 5.1 overs, with Mumbai 25 for 0, Capitals had a 43% chance of losing the game. At 5.2, when Rohit fell, that dropped to 38%
At 11.2 overs, with Mumbai 76 for 1, Capitals had a 57% chance of losing the game. At 11.3, when Kishan fell, that dropped to 49%
At 14.3 overs, with Mumbai 95 for 2, Capitals had a 31% chance of losing the game. At 14.4, when Brevis fell, that dropped to 23%.
227 Tim David's strike rate in the death (17-20) overs this season. Only two players have done better - Rashid Khan and Rovman Powell.

Thakur strikes

The drop only costs 12 runs as Shardul Thakur takes out Dewald Brevis for 35.
Capitals had a mini-conference before the start of this 15th over. Pant spent a lot of time talking to the bowler. He knew the game is on the line. He knew every move he makes right now absolutely has to pay off. He went to Thakur because Thakur has a habit of making things happen. And it continues.
Tellingly, Thakur's reaction is more relief than anything. Capitals were struggling to stay in it.
Mumbai 95 for 3. They still need 65 in 33 balls. Their chances of victory are 22%

Pant drops a dolly!

The 12th should've been a double-wicket over.
A horribly mistimed slog sweep from Brevis goes straight up in the air. Doesn't even cross the middle of the pitch. Seeing the man with the gloves coming for the ball, Kuldeep who could've also caught it, backs off.
This is a swirler though. And it keeps going away from Pant. In the end, he's reaching out in front of him, and the ball bobbles off the webbing and falls to the floor. Is that the Capitals' season?

Kishan gone

The wicket of the set batter brings Mumbai's chance of victory down by 10%.
That's how huge the pendulum will swing in this game, because new batters will find it so very hard to get used to this slow, turner of a pitch.
At the end of the 11th over, with Mumbai 74 for 1, they were 58% favourites. Three balls later, with Kuldeep knocking over Kishan for 48, that's come down to 48%.

Mumbai set the platform

20 runs off the five overs between the fifth and the ninth. The spin strangle is well and truly on
Ishan Kishan has decided he'll bat through the innings. His strike rate is just above a run a ball. He's going to stay there for as long as he can, take the game as deep as he can, so that a finisher like Tim David can come in and do his thing late on. Mumbai will back themselves to get 10 an over in the death if they have enough wickets in hand.
After all, it is still possible to get runs here, as Kishan and Dewald Brevis show against Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel in the 10th and 11th overs.

The tension

There doesn't appear to be any dew on the outfield, which means this is going to be a very tight game. Mumbai's batting has looked a long way off its peak this season. And Capitals have the bowlers - Axar, Kuldeep and even Marsh, who from round the wicket got one to straighten past Kishan's outside edge like nobody's business in the fifth over - that can exploit these conditions. Mumbai will want their openers to go big here, and so do, as it turns out, their brand new friends for just one night.
Oops, Rohit falls for 2 off 13. Maxi, what did you do?! Mumbai 25 for 1 in the 6th over. Their chances of victory are 38.21%

Khaleel on the rise

Early on, a lot of people were talking about Khaleel Ahmed just because he was a left-armer. A lot of teams look for that variation. That point of difference. Trent Boult provides it for New Zealand. Mitchell Starc provides it for Australia. Shaheen Afridi provides it for Pakistan. It's bank.
But Khaleel wasn't the finished product. He wasn't fast enough. So he went back and worked on that. He sometimes struggled when he was under attack. So he went back and worked on that. Now, in this IPL, he's bowling the way a bowler with 10-years' experience would.
He senses when the batter is looking for the release shot better. And he puts the ball at exactly the spot that makes that release shot hard to hit. His first spell tonight reads 2-0-2-0, including a second over full of plays and misses (4) from Rohit Sharma

The (wrong) gameplan

Anrich Nortje comes in with pace on the ball. Ishan Kishan makes him disappear.

Capitals need to go to their slower bowlers asap. Kishan's got those two fours by just leaning into his drives and then the six was a hook shot that just sailed away, all because of the 145kph+ pace on the ball. Mumbai 15 for 0 in two overs

Bumrah magic

Jasprit Bumrah is extraordinary. Even on a slow pitch, he's hurried batters with his pace and picked up the kind of wickets that will form a fast bowling hype reel. Prithvi Shaw bounced out. Mitchell Marsh caught at first slip. Rovman Powell cuh-lean bowled.
The thought of him bowling in tandem with Jofra Archer next season is just bonkers.

Spot the over from the part-timer. Ramandeep concedes 19 in nine balls, including three wides, but ends it with the wicket of Rishabh Pant.
Capitals are 125 for 5 with 24 balls left in the innings. The forecast is up at a fairly healthy 165.

Ian Bishop on Rovman Powell

It is not easy for elite sportspeople to accept that they're not good at something. For one thing, it could give the people who make selection calls all the ammo they need to cut you from the team. And who knows what happens from there? But if your dressing room is like 5% less cutthroat, you'll be surprised how quickly a weakness turns to strength.
Rovman Powell once struggled to hit spin. Then he called up Marlon Samuels' brother to help him get better. The work they did expanded his range of shots. He's much happier coming down the track at spin now. He's also become a good sweeper of the ball. Those are like the two shots that drive spinners mad.
Powell's on a journey of self-improvement and this game could very well end up a massive milestone in a career that's got a long long way to go.

Shokeen gets got in the 12th over; although that four was a horrible misfield from Bumrah at short third man. Second one in two overs actually after Tilak Varma let one go between his legs on the long-on boundary. Capitals 84 for 4. The forecast is for 158

Shokeen and Markande

On a slow pitch like this, a batter wants two things. Pace on the ball and room to free the arms. Mumbai are offering neither. Now that kinda thing is normal for a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah. He's played all over the world. He's been in every kind of match situation. He's got experience.
But here Capitals are being tied down by Hrithik Shokeen, the 21-year old who made his IPL debut this season, and Mayank Markande, the 24-year old playing just his second game of the season. The two of them nearly combined to take out Pant in the 11th over. Shokeen at cover dives forward to try and get under a cut shot but the ball falls short of him.

Capitals 50 for 4 for 8.4 in seven overs. On top of losing those four wickets, they've scored only 29 runs in the last 35 balls.
Rishabh Pant doesn't have a fifty this season. But he still has over 300 runs at a strike rate of 157. Now that says he's not so much of form as he is out of luck. This is a batter who can match AB de Villiers for range and Andre Russell for power. He's also being seen as a future India captain. He's out there now with his team in trouble. Imagine the props he'll get if he can lead them out of it.
ESPNcricinfo's forecaster suggests they'll only get a total of 147 from here. This pitch is turning. It's not coming onto the bat. Run-scoring really won't get any easier in the second innings, assuming there's no dew. Capitals need to pace themselves to last the 20 overs now. Pant has to bat through and give his bowlers something to defend. A 150-160 total can still be more than useful on this pitch.

Bumrah magic

Serious pace. Scary accuracy. That's what it takes to bring down a power-hitter. But to also make him look like he doesn't want to be out there? That's all Jasprit Bumrah.
He goes bouncer against Prithvi Shaw, which is just sensible thinking. Shaw is very much a front foot player. Deny him that and you've got half the battle won.
This one follows him - and it's fast and isn't all that high either - so it has a lot of jeopardy. Shaw doesn't have a lot of time. He knows its coming for him. He tries to pull out but it pops up off his gloves and into the keeper's
Sublime fast bowling from a sublime fast bowler. Capitals 37 for 3 in 6 overs. Our forecaster says they'll get to 153 in 20.

The Powerplay hitters

Thanks to a bit of super-sleuthing from Shiva Jayaraman, senior stats analyst at ESPNcricinfo, here's a little hope for the Capitals fans.
Among those who have faced at least 100 balls in the powerplay since the 2018 IPL, these are the ones with the best balls-per-boundary ratio.
Sunil Narine 3.21 balls per boundary
Parthiv Patel 3.88 balls per boundary
Chris Gayle 3.95 balls per boundary
Suryakumar Yadav 4.00 balls per boundary
Prithvi Shaw 4.00 balls per boundary

Warner gone

Capitals one down in the third over. David Warner is caught at short third man by a back of a length ball that doesn't really come onto him the way he thought it would. Again signs of a slow pitch. Mitchell Marsh played a beautiful innings on a similar pitch the last time he was out to bat. Here he is again. Capitals 21 for 1.Welp, they're 22 for 2, Marsh is gone for a duck, nicked off by Bumrah.

A seven-ball sequence that started with a gorgeous six has gone completely pear shaped for the Capitals.

Spin-hitting

In the back end of the IPL, especially one that's been played in the same four stadiums, slow bowling starts to look like the better option.
Left-arm seamer Daniel Sams included a 119kph bouncer in his first over.
Then the ball went to Hrithik Shokeen and his offspin cost Mumbai just six runs in the second over. Capitals 12 for 0.
Capitals are going to need to spin hit and spin hit well here to set good total. And guess who's a great spin hitter. Rishabh Pant.

Toss: Mumbai bowl

Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Ramandeep Singh, 5 Dewald Brevis, 6 Tim David, 7 Daniel Sams, 8 Hrithik Shokeen, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Riley Meredith, 11 Murugan Ashwin/Mayank Markande
Delhi Capitals: 1 David Warner, 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Sarfaraz Khan, 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Khaleel Ahmed
Rohit Sharma says it's a good track and we always wanted to bowl first, even as rain comes down in Mumbai. He also says they wanted to have a target in front of them to chase. He felt that the team has been inconsistent and failed to perform as a unit in all departments. Two changes: Brevis in for Stubbs. Shokeen in place of Sanjay
Pant says they would have loved to bowl first too. One change, Prithvi Shaw comes in for Lalit Yadav

Kuldeep got talent

Kuldeep Yadav was lost last year. India didn't want him. KKR didn't want him. Even his own body was being an emoticon I can't post here because this is a family site. When your self-belief gets hit like that, it's hard to get back up. But Kuldeep did. With the support of people like Ricky Ponting, who said all he needed to be his old self was a little love.
Fourteen wickets in the season, including those of Andre Russell, Glenn Maxwell, Kieron Pollard, Liam Livingstone, and it's clear that this talent isn't going away any time soon. Here is former India legspinner Piyush Chawla explaining what Kuldeep has done well this season (video available to fans in India only)

Welcome!

There is one last spot in the playoffs left. It's Delhi Capitals' if they win tonight. But if they lose, Royal Challengers Bangalore go into the knockouts.
Mumbai Indians usually have a lot to do with who becomes IPL champion. And even in this season they'll have their say.
Basically, if Rohit beats Pant here, Kohli goes into the playoffs.
