As it happened: Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2022

By Sidharth Monga

Powell takes DC home

Rovman Powell settles any nerves there might have been 33 off 16, hitting three massive sixes. That gives DC two points, and KKR their fifth straight defeat. We leave you with a teaser from the final report. Do join us tomorrow.
"Part of Kolkata Knight Riders, Kuldeep Yadav didn’t get a single game last IPL. The reason perhaps is that in the two preceding IPLs, he picked just five wickets in 45 overs. In seven overs this year against the franchise that let him go, Kuldeep has taken eight wickets, consigning them to their second defeat against Delhi Capitals. However, it could still be argued that he is still looking for a captain who makes optimum use of him: he bowled just the three overs despite taking four wickets because two left-hand batters were at the wicket.
The part-time offspinner used instead gave Nitish Rana the launching pad for a 30-ball fifty that took KKR to 146 but it proved inadequate against a power-filled DC batting line-up. David Warner led the response with a 26-ball 42 but they kept losing wickets as they looked to dominate the chase. Rovman Powell and Axar Patel, though, saw them home in the end with one over to spare."

Under a run a ball

Harshit Rana walked off with an injury some time ago so Venkatesh Iyer has to chip in with one over. Now Shreyas could have kept that over for the end, but he bowls him in the 17th, and Rovman Powell welcomes him with a six over long-on. A toop-edges boundary later in the over takes it down to 16 off 18. Tim Southee is bowling the 18th, which leaves Andre Russell with one over and then someone else will have to bowl the 20th.

Axar hits Russell but is run out

The 15th over begins with 48 required but Axar Patel settles DC nerves with two high-quality shots against the short balls from Andre Russell. The pull goes for four through midwicket, and the upper-cut goes for a six. Off the last ball of the over, though, Axar is run out taking an ambitious second. They need 34 off the last five but have only four wickets in hand.

What a turnaround

KKR go aggressive with Umesh Yadav and Sunil Narine bowling in tandem. Narine produces the wicket of Lalit Yadav with an accurate offbreak that turns just enough to miss the bat but not the wicket. Umesh then bowls out as early as the 12th over, producing the wicket of Rishabh Pant. The ball holds its line against the angle from round the wicket, and takes the edge through to the keeper. It's 84 for in 11.1, which makes KKR 27% favourites to win.

Umesh Yadav keeps KKR alive

A superb bouncer from round the wicket, cramping David Warner up, which means he can't get his arms through the hook. The top edge still carries all the way to the fine leg fence where he is caught. You give them a little bit of room to swing their arms, and top edges go for sixes here. He is caught here for 42 off 26. At 82 for 3 in the 10th over, they are 90% favourites to win.

Not the day for part-time offspin

Just after the time-out, Shreyas Iyer goes to Nitish Ran's offspin only for three boundaries to come off the ninth over. Lalit Yadav pulls him for one before David Warner hits one back down the ground and the other wide of long-off. At 80 for 2 in nine overs, they are 93% favourites to win now.

Warner keeps DC ahead

The powerplay ends at 47 for 2 with David warner having scored 24 off 15. So despite ZLalit Yadav getting stuck on 7 off 13, DC are 77% favourites to win here.

Redemption for Harshit Rana

Mitchell Marsh has come out with a licence to go after everything, especially when the debutant is feeling his way into the IPL. He hits two and four off the first two balls from Harshit Rana, but then the third one swings in a little, making him hit to leg (the previous hits had been straight). Marsh has nailed this one, but he has picked out the only deep fielder on the leg side, the deep backward square leg. It's 17 for 2 in 1.3 overs. DC still 69% favourites to win.

Umesh Yadav. What an athlete

First ball of the chase. looks like a full ball on the pads. Prithvi Shaw closes the face, but it swings that slight nit to take the leading edge. Umesh changes direction in his follow-through, and dives full length to his left to take the catch. DC 0 for 1. Still 69% favourites to win.

Mustafizur pulls it back

Mustafizur Rahman produces a superb final over to take three wickets for one run and one leg-bye to restrict KKR to 146. It was an innings that never got going in the Powerplay, Kuldeep Yadav then made it much worse with four wickets, but Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh threatened a score only for Mustafizur to puncture their hopes.

Fifty for Rana

With a six over cover off Shardul Thakur, Nitish Rana gets to 54 off 30 balls. This is some turnaround, taking the projected score to 154 with 11 balls to go. How significant is that Lalit over going to be? And can you believe that Kuldeep Yadav is going to end up with figures of 3-0-14-4? One of them wickets is a left-hand batter, Sunil Narine.

Lalit goes for plenty again

At the start of the death overs, Mustafizur has two overs left, Kuldeep has one, Sakariya one and Thakur two, but Pant goes to Lalit for the 17th over because they are two left-hand batters in the middle. One of them, Nitish Rana, has a good record against offspinners. He takes two sixes off the 17th over, making it 118 for 6. All three sixes of this innings have been hit off Lalit. Projected score 148 now.

Panrt can do no wrong

This could be the game right here. Andre Russell faces two dots, and, against character, leaves the crease third ball. Kuldeep has bowled the wrong'un, which beats him comprehensively, and even when Rishabh Pant fails to collect the ball cleanly, the rebound falls on the wicket to complete a clean stumping. It's 83 for 6. Projected score 146 now, but that will take some getting.

Sensational keeping

Rishabh Pant has pulled off an absolute blinder behind the wicket to send Shreyas Iyer back. It's a wrong'un from Kuldeep Yadav that has taken a healthy bottom edge, and the ball is going straight down, but Pant has managed to get his right glove down in time to catch it by his shoe laces. It is an amazing eye, athleticism and hands. It's 83 for 5 now, and Kuldeep has three.

The Lalit Yadav fixation

Even in the last match, Rishabh Pant used Lalit Yadav in the middle overs only for him to be taken for plenty. Here, too, he introduces Lalit in the 13th over, and his Delhi team-mate, Nitish Rana, chooses this time to hit the first six of the innings. It's 83 for 4, taking the projected score to 154.

Shreyas finds the boundary

Finally Shreyas Iyer breaks free, hitting two fours off Axar Patel in the 12th over. They are finally at a run a ball after 12. Projected to get 149 now.

Where are the boundaries?

3 Number of boundaries in the first 11 overs of the KKR innings, all fours. They are 61 for 4, projected to reach 145

Kuldeep keeps hurting KKR

There was a time when he couldn't get a game for KKR. Now, playing for DC, he is rocking his former team a second time around. After figures of 4-0-35-4, which got him the Player of the Match in the first match between these sides, he has two wickets in his first three balls in the return match.
First is debutant B Indrajith, trying to hit a six, but finding long-on because he gets too close to the ball. Next up is a superb wrong'un to trap the promoted Sunil Narine lbw. KKR 35 for 4, facing a hat-trick ball from Kuldeep.
Nitish Rana avoids the hat-trick but the projected score now reads 144.

Second-season blues for Venkatesh?

Venkatesh's horror IPL continues

Back at the top of the order, Venkatesh Iyer is still struggling for touch. Having scored 6 off 11, he finally times a sweep well, but he has found short fine leg to perfection off the bowling of Axar Patel. He now has 132 runs off 135 balls in nine innings this IPL. KKR 22 for 2 in 4.3 overs.

The swing

Captains have spoken of how the ball has swung more and for later this IPL. Add to it the teams going harder at the top. So we have more wickets falling early. Aaron Finch, for example, today. He tries a big slog in the second over, but Chetan Sakariya's swing does him in. Both Mustafizur Rahman and Sakariya are swinging it. KKR 4 for 1 in 1.3 overs.

Former DC captain against DC

Welcome to match 41 of IPL 2022. It is Delhi Capitals against Kolkata Knight Riders. Shreyas Iyer coming up against a team he would have been leading had he not got injured. In the first match between these sides, Capitals won easily by 44 runs. Capitals have had some time to cool themselves off after their heated last match. Both the sides are looking to pull out of the bottom four. DC have six points from seven games, KKR have six from eight. These are desperate times for both sides in terms of qualification hopes.
