As it happened - Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, DY Patil Stadium

By Sidharth Monga and Deivarayan Muthu

Bravo closes it out for CSK

Bravo has Dinesh Karthik holing out for 34 off 14 balls, with Jadeja taking the the catch at the edge of the midwicket boundary. First time that Karthik has been dismissed this IPL and first points for CSK this season. Karthik's late blows, however, limited the NRR damage for RCB. CSK eventually win by 23 runs

CSK's death-bowling specialists Bravo and Jordan have five overs between them, but it is Choudhary who bowls the 17th and leaks 23 off it. Karthik farms the strike, deciding against a double last ball. RCB need 48 off 18 balls with two wickets in hand

Theekshana takes four

The Sri Lankan mystery spinner comes away with a wicket to show for in each of his four overs. He finishes with 4-0-33-4. The carrom ball does the trick for him once again in his last over, bursting through the defences of Shahbaz Ahmed. RCB are 133 for 6 in the 15th over and they fall to 146 for 7 in the next over as Hasaranga holes out.

Prabhudessai sparkles with the bat

After turning it on in the field, Prabhudessai is turning it on with the bat, on debut. He throws Jadeja off his rhythm reverse-sweeping him over short third man for four and then slog-sweeping him over midwicket for six. CSK had two chances to dismiss Prabudessai, but Choudhary dropped him in the outfield on both occasions.
Theekshana then comes back into the attack in the 12th over and takes out Prabhudessai without needing any assistance from his fielders. Prabhudessai is bowled by what looks like the carrom ball for 34 off 18 balls. Dinesh Karthik or bust for RCB?

Jadeja joins the party

Maxwell counterpunched his way to 26 off 10 balls, but Jadeja wins the match-up against the batter once again, in the seventh over. This is the seventh time in 13 T20 innings that Jadeja has dismissed Maxwell. Uphill task ahead for Shahbaz and IPL debutant Prabhudessai

Spin in the powerplay

Earlier in the evening, Josh Hazlewood and Mohammed Siraj handcuffed CSK's top order with Test-match lines and lengths with some swing. CSK now throw their spinners into the action in the powerplay. Perhaps, they want to give their spinners a chance with the dry ball.
Theekshana responds well, accounting for two of the three wickets to fall in the first six overs of the chase. He first has Faf du Plessis caught at long-on for 8 off nine balls and then pins Anuj Rawat lbw with a skidder for 12 off 16 balls. Moeen supported Theekshana with 2-0-7-0. Left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary also strikes in the powerplay, claiming the big wicket of Kohli for 1 off 3 balls. RCB are 42 for 3 in six overs

That's the 18th over, bowled by Akash Deep. Shivam Dube did to Deep what Uthappa did to Siraj in the last over. CSK are 187 for 2 already, and are projected to get 209 now.

The second of those sixes in the 17th over, bowled by Mohammed Siraj, was vintage Robin Uthappa. He walked at the bowler, and lofted what would have otherwise been a hard length for a straight six with a flat bat. It's 163 for 3. Projected score is 195 now. Uthappa 81 off 46.

Fifties for Uthappa and Dube

RCB don't have Harshal Patel to go to to stop the bleeding. Robit Uthappa and Shivam Dube are taking apart the rest. In the 15th over, bowled by Akash Deep, both of them bring up their fifties, Uthappa in 33 balls and Dube in 30. They are 133 for 2 in 15. Projected score is 183. And this is the stage where Hazlewood's lengths are not that effective.

Playing against brothers

If Faf du Plessis and Josh Hazlewood are going up against their old team CSK, Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa have their own connections with RCB. The Royal Challengers Bangalore represent Uthappa's home city, and are Dube's former IPL team. They are giving RCB a sample of what they are missing out on. Uthappa is 45 off 39, Dube 39 off 24.

All three sixes over the bigger leg-side boundary. Robin Uthappa takes down Glenn Maxwell. It's 105 for 2 in 13 overs. Projected score is 172 now. These last three overs have been massive.

CSK finally open up

Wanindu Hasaranga is introduced as late as the 11th over, and the reason probably is the presence of a left-hand batter. Shivam Dube does go ahead and gets stuck into Hasaranga, hitting him for a four and a six, and taking 13 off the over. At 73 for 2 after 11 overs, the projected score reads 154.

Uthappa's slowest start

100 Robin Uthappa's strike rate in the powerplay at 14 off 14. That is a win for RCB as Uthappa has been the quickest batter in the powerplay this IPL.

Suyash Prabhudessai on board

Goa's Suyash Prabhudessai is on the board even before getting to bat or bowl. A diving save at backward point, Moeen Ali sent back, and RCB have a run-out. CSK are 37 for 2 in seven overs. Projected score 145.

Gaikwad's poor season continues

35 Runs Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored in five innings this IPL, at an average of 7. Josh Hazlewood's suffocating lengths make him play a pull shot that is not ot, and he is out lbw. At 19 for 1 in four overs, projected score is 153

A bowling machine called Hazlewood

Last year, CSK used Josh Hazlewood to bowl the hard lengths to great effect. He has been been playing Tests in Pakistan, and has just walked in and bowled a first over of hard lengths for just two runs. CSK 8 for 0 in two overs.

Du Plessis wins toss against 'brothers'

CSK are unchanged, and are having to bat first again.

The old classic

One of the old classics of the IPL: RCB vs CSK. For the first time this year. It is game 22 of IPL 2022. Such a shame it is not happening in either Chennai or Bangalore. CSK are practically in must-win territory so early in the season. RCB are without Harshal Patel, who lost his sister. Josh Hazlewood is available now. Also the RCB captain Faf du Plessis comes up against his last team, CSK. It's also Dinesh Karthik, whom his captain calls the closest thing to MS Dhoni, up against Dhoni. Get ready. Toss pretty soon.
