Live report: Australia vs Netherlands, Delhi

By Abhimanyu Bose

And that will be all!

So, Australia have definitely announced their arrival at the World Cup with the last two matches. David Warner in steaming hot form, Glenn Maxwell finding his mojo, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne getting runs, and the bowlers picking up powerplay wickets again - it was as perfect a game as Australia could have asked for. They stay in a strong position to take that top four finish. Be sure to tune in tomorrow, with England taking on Sri Lanka, with both teams near the point of no return. Until then, goodnight!

Maxwell: 'Doubts creep in when you're not scoring'

Here's what Player of the Match Glenn Maxwell had to say: "(Fastest WC hundred record) Not something I set out to do. Just situation of the game. Wanted to put a good platform for the back end and cash in on this ground. Ball can run away quite quickly. Nice to get in rhythm. (What clicked) Just making good decisions. Give myself a little bit of time and give myself a bit of confidence and platform. (Going forward) Huge confidence booster knowing I've got that in my locker. Doubts can creep in when not scoring consistently but good to score this. (Clinical?) Close to the perfect game if you score 400 and bowl them out for under 400. Lot of guys got to have a hit. We've had three really good wins in a row."

Australia run Netherlands ragged

Australia register a massive 309-run win, fitting with their dominance through pretty much every phase of this game. David Warner, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne laid down the platform and Glenn Maxwell came in late in the first innings to really set off the fireworks.
With a mammoth target of 400 in front of them, Netherlands looked to start bright, but Australia's powerplay wickets suddenly returned, although Vikramjit Singh all but threw away his wicket with an unnecessary run-out.
Pat Cummins struck immediately after the tenth over and then Mitchell Marsh picked up two quick wickets before Adam Zampa spun out the last four wickets in two consecutive overs.
Australia go to six points, and are fourth on the table after this win, that also gives them a massive NRR boost.

Zampa completes the job!

Adam Zampa picks up a four-wicket haul for the third consecutive game and Australia now have the largest ever World Cup win! Zampa traps Aryan Dutt lbw and then has van Meekeren stumped down leg side, with Josh Inglis dropping the ball onto the stumps. Two overs in a row, Zampa has picked back-to-back wickets and helps clean up one of the most stubborn tails in this tournament.
2

2

Zampa runs through Netherlands

Adam Zampa came into the attack and gave away four runs in his first over. Mitchell Marsh had Teja Nidamanuru caught behind down the leg side next over and it was back to Zampa.
And two fresh batters is just what the leggie would have wanted. He has Logan van Beek caught behind as he tries to cut a legspinner outside off that was not short enough to cut. And then he bowls the wrong'un first up to Roelof van der Merwe to trap him lbw.
On a hat-trick, he opts for the googly again but Aryan Dutt is able to just about jam his bat down and get an inside edge onto his pad. No hat-trick, but Zampa has taken out two of the stubborn lower-order batters that helped Netherlands rebuild in their last two games.
2

Mitchell Starc, lethal in the World Cup

23 No. of consecutive ODI World Cup games where Mitchell Starc has taken a wicket
Starc has taken at least one wicket in each of his 23 ODI World Cup games, which also makes it the longest streak of a bowler going wicket-less in the competition. The next best on the list - Glenn McGrath with a 13-game streak between 2003 and 2007.

Warner, you beauty!

Mitchell Marsh bumps in a short ball and Sybrand Engelbrecht middles his pull in front of square. Marsh has probably already added six to his "runs conceded" column in his head. But wait, what's that? David Warner's popped up and grabbed that!
That pull was hit flat and hard. It was flying in when Warner moved to his right and leapt high to grab it with both hands, right above his head. Warner also has the awareness of where the boundary rope is and the balance to land safe without either going over the rope or losing the ball.
This game has already seen many excellent displays of fielding, and this may just be the top of the pops today.
And the wicket means Netherlands have lost half their side, and more importantly, a batter who was settling in well amid a tumble of wickets.

Australia have a better powerplay

6 Australia's powerplay wickets in the 2023 World Cup
Before today, Australia had taken just three powerplay wickets in four games, and all of those came in the first game of their campaign against India. The powerplay bowling would have been a concern for the team, but they will be happy to have dealt some damage in the early overs

The Sybrand experiment continues

Netherlands started the World Cup with Sybrand Engelbrecht at No. 7. He was pushed up to No. 5 against South Africa and returned to No. 7 against Sri Lanka, where he scored his career-best 70. However, that knock has earned him another promotion, with the 35-year-old pushed up to No. 4 today. And he starts off with a gorgeous cover drive, so maybe this move is worth the try? We'll find out soon enough.

Can't keep Maxwell out of the action!

Not long after hitting the fastest century in men's ODI World Cups, Glenn Maxwell has effected a brilliant direct hit to run Vikramjit Singh out. Vikramjit Singh pushed a length ball towards mid-off and set off for a run that was never there. And Maxwell makes no mistake in picking up the ball and hitting the bullseye at the non-striker's end.

Starc draws level with Malinga!

Length ball staying straight and Max O'Dowd chops on! Mitchell Starc now has 56 wickets in ODI World Cups, putting him joint-third along with Lasith Malinga. Only Glenn McGrath (71) and Muttiah Muralidaran (68) have more than them.
Starc has taken 23 games to get to the number, while Malinga took 29.

Netherlands off to a rapid start

Vikramjit Singh plays the aggressor's role as Netherlands race to 27 in the first three overs. Hazlewood pulls things back a little and nearly has Vikramjit run out, but his throw at the striker's end just misses. Only one run comes off the fourth over.

Glenn Maxwell puts on the big show

Three wickets in the space of four overs meant Netherlands had a chance at curtailing Australia's assault at the death. But between them and their objective stood Glenn Maxwell. Yes, the same Glenn Maxwell who was averaging 12.4 in ODIs in 2023 before today. The same one who hadn't hit a half-century in India in ODIs since the start of 2017.
But after a few drives down the ground and a cover drive, and a few deliveries steered fine on either side of the wicket, Maxwell came into his own.
Pacers were reverse-swept and he switch-hit short balls for six. Wide yorkers carved behind point all the way. And he was also strong down the ground and over midwicket.
And, having come in to bat in the 39th over and faced his first delivery in the 41st, Maxwell's century is a tremendous effort, and to me, evoked memories of AB de Villiers' brutal takedown of West Indies.

Netherlands set 400 to chase

Netherlands will have a tough task in front of them when they come out to bat after centuries from David Warner and Glenn Maxwell set Australia up with a mammoth total.
There were fifties too, from Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, but the innings belonged to Warner and Maxwell.
Mitchell Marsh fell early, but Warner and Smith put on their fifth 100-plus ODI stand to lay down the platform for a big finish. Labuschagne came on and picked up from where Smith left off but departed soon after his fifty.
Warner eventually got to his second consecutive century, and sixth in World Cups, and then it was all about Glenn Maxwell.
Maxwell blasted 106 off 44 deliveries, smashing Aiden Markram's record for the fastest World Cup century not a month after he had made it, to finish the innings off in some style.
Logan van Beek took four wickets, but it will be little consolation. Bas de Leede picked two but now has bowled the most expensive spell ever in ODIs, going for two more than Adam Zampa and Mick Lewis' 113.

Maxwell falls for 106

Maxwell tries to go down the ground off Logan van Beek but Sybrand Engelbrecht does well around long-off to take the catch. Nine fours and eight sixes, that's what he hit in 44 deliveries as he brought up a record-breaking century. And to think, he did not have a single half-century in ODIs in India since 2017!

Aiden Markram made that record on the same venue and the same strip against Sri Lanka, off 49 deliveries. But Maxwell takes just 40 to get there in an over of pure carnage!
Bas de Leede sees two full deliveries pumped back over him for fours so he goes short and Maxwell pulls him for six over midwicket. Banged in short again and he swivels to pull de Leede for another maximum. Short again (and a no ball) and another swivel and pull to bring up the century.
He can't take toll off the free hit and Cummins misses out on a pull as the over goes for 28 runs in the end, with de Leede conceding 115 off his 10 overs.

Maxwell continues his carnage. Punishes a slot ball outside off by sending it over long-on before Max O'Dowd lets a ball slip by him at deep midwicket after Pat Cummins pull bounces just in front of him. Maxwell however, isn't done and he takes on a wide yorker by carving it over deep third.

For Glenn Maxwell, the ridiculous is often the norm. And you can see why when you watch him nonchalantly reverse-sweep a pacer over point. And an over later, he does it again, this time for six, to bring up his first half-century of 2023! Paul van Meekeren the first bowler to fall prey to the reverse-sweep before de Leede follows suit.
And Maxwell then ups the ante, getting in the switch-hit position before the short ball has even pitched and then pulling it fine of short third.

Tough chance for Nidamanuru

Teja Nidamanuru was always in second position in the chase for this ball as Glenn Maxwell chips a ball over mid-off. He was running back and had to track back a long way and it falls just beyond him as he turns and tries to snag it. Could have got fingertips on that, but that was an extremely difficult opportunity.

Engelbrecht missile sends Green packing!

Netherlands have often relied on excellent bits of fielding whenever they have impressed in World Cups and that does not change today. Sybrand Engelbrecht runs across from long-on to pick a ball flicked through a vacant midwicket region by Glenn Maxwell. He picks the ball up and is quick to zone in on his target and his throw is on the money as Cameron Green is caught well short of the crease at the non-striker's end. The second run looked very much on but some inspired fielding means Australia have lost another wicket

Logan van Beek gets the big wicket of Warner

Bas de Leede gets Inglis

Inglis falls for 14 off 12 as he looks for another pull but this time ends up skying it. Sybrand Engelbrecht takes the catch, reverse-cupped, between deep midwicket and deep square leg. Bas de Leede stuck to a shorter length and bowled a wobble seam. Two quick wickets for Netherlands, but Australia still have some big hitters left, like Glenn Maxwell, who has just walked in now.

ODI century No. 22 for David Warner!

It's back-to-back World Cup hundreds for David Warner! And he moves level with Sourav Ganguly and Tillakaratne Dilshan in the all-time list. He has smashed eleven fours and three sixes to get to the milestone in 92 balls. Australia's best ODI batter in 2023 and their top run-getter in the World Cup keeps the party going! In the last seven odd overs, he has faced just 12 deliveries and after being starved of strike, he gets a short ball and pulls it behind square for four. He gets lucky with a misfield, but this is another mighty century to cherish for him.

Inglis off to a quick start

Josh Inglis got off the mark pulling de Leede along the ground for four behind square. And in the next over, plays a more authoritative pull over midwicket to send van Beek for six. He has moved on to 13 off 9 at the end of 38 overs

Labuschagne dominates Dutt but Dutt gets his revenge!

Marnus Labuschagne has taken a special liking to the offspinner today, hitting him for 27 runs off 18 deliveries. At the start of the previous over, Labuschagne hit him for a six over long-off and a boundary swept behind square.
But now, Aryan Dutt takes the catch as Labuschagne ends up chipping Bas de Leede to mid-on. Labuschagne can't get the elevation he was looking for and Netherlands get rid of another set batter who was looking to accelerate.

Quick fifty for Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne becomes the third Australian batter to notch a half-century today. And he has taken 42 balls to get there. It's his ninth in 41 innings. He also has two centuries in the format. A good knock from him at a time when his place may be up for grabs, with Travis Head returning.

Netherlands have picked two wickets, but Australia will feel the happier side at drinks. At 199 after 31 overs, they have the platform to launch a big finish from. And Warner is closing in on a century while Labuschagne is chugging along nicely. Interesting 19 overs to come!

"He's very motivating, drags everyone with him"

Here's what Paul van Meekeren had to say about Roelof van der Merwe in an interview by Nagraj Gollapudi:
"I've been playing cricket with him since 2015 - for the Dutch team and at Somerset for three and a half years. When he is doing anything competitive, not just cricket, he just doesn't like losing. We have had it twice now this World Cup, where we had a man too far out of the [30-yard] circle - it's probably not the best time to have a camera aimed at him because he doesn't like those simple mistakes that could have been avoided. I remember there was season at Somerset where I was bowling a few no-balls. So every no-ball I bowled, not just in a game but even at practice, I had to pay him one pound. He was watching me like a hawk at training [to ensure] I kept my foot behind the line. And even if he does it himself, he's just as hard as on himself as he is on others. I don't know, 55 or however old he is [38], he keeps throwing that body around and keeps fighting for every run. And that's very motivating. He drags everyone with him. If you look at the team, everybody throws themselves around in the field and we've complemented each other enough in our fielding this tournament so far."

And this time the Bulldog has held on!

Roelof van der Merwe will feel vindicated now as he takes another brilliant catch - again reverse-cupped - and this time Steven Smith has to go! He looked to cut Aryan Dutt but the ball went to van der Merwe's right at short third and he made no mistake as he dived low to grab that.

A pull over deep fine leg and a flick behind square saw Smith rack up ten runs in the first two balls of this Bas de Leede over. Warner, after getting on strike, gets another four with a pull through midwicket.
But off the next ball, he drives through cover and Roelof van der Merwe puts in a fantastic dive to his right and seemingly grabs a screamer. But he went for it reverse-cupped and replays indicate the ball may have grazed the ground as he landed. The third umpire asks for the decision to be reversed. Warner, who was convinced immediately that the fielder had grounded it, gets a reprieve.
And, to make things worse for Netherlands, Warner crunches the next ball behind point for four more!

Having survived a run-out chance in the first ball of the previous over, Warner greets Vikramjit Singh with first a six down the ground to his left before an imperious punch past his right to race to his 53rd ODI score of 50 or more. Warner gets a life!

Warner clips a ball to midwicket and takes off for a single, but Max O'Dowd doesn't collect cleanly with the two batters suddenly running for the non-striker's end. The fumble allows Warner enough time to get back at the striker's end. Doesn't look like it's affected his nerves though, as two balls later, he rocks back and deposits a long hop over midwicket.

Leg-side heavy Smith

Smith has raced to 43 off 37 and only five of those runs have come on the off side, off two scoring shots. He has been leg-side heavy, as he tends to be. And now he is headed towards a 31st ODI fifty. But the Netherlands quicks have also been helpful, with several deliveries straying onto his pads.

Will the real Steven Smith please stand up?

Steven Smith has not had the best years when it comes to ODI cricket. He averages 25.3 in 2023, and that's the second-lowest among all the No. 3 batters who are playing this World Cup. And he has had a big drop in how he has fared against right-arm quicks this year compared to the last three. While he got out to right-arm pacers only 16 times in 450 balls from after the 2019 World Cup to the end of 2022, he has been dismissed six times in 96 balls in 2023.

Pace does the trick for Netherlands!

First change in bowling pays instant dividends for Netherlands. Logan van Beek comes in and bowls two dots, a wide and two more dots. Then a short ball, wide of off and Marsh, who defended or left the previous deliveries alone, decides to have a pull. It's too wide for him to fetch it from and the ball goes high in the sky. Ackermann runs in from the off side and takes it safely. Marsh departs for 9 off 15.

Weakness against offspin? Warner knows nothing of it! Alright he starts Aryan Dutt's second over with a dot, and finishes it with another dot, but there are four boundaries sandwiched in between. Dutt went for length balls outside off and Warner, for four balls in a row, picked the gap between backward point and short third. Expensive start from Dutt, who also conceded two boundaries off Mitchell Marsh in his first over.

Spin from both ends

It's not just Aryan Dutt but also Colin Ackermann sharing the new ball. This is only the third time in the men's ODI World Cup that spinners opened the bowling from both ends. The previous two instances were Nathan McCullum and Daniel Vettori vs South Africa in 2011 and Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam vs New Zealand in 2015, both in the second innings.

Can Aryan Dutt stop David Warner early?

David Warner averages 27.6 against offspinners, which is his worst average against any bowling type in ODIs since the last World Cup, and Aryan Dutt has been impressive with the new ball for the Netherlands. That matchup is sure to play a big role in the early exchanges. But Warner is having a great 2023, and is Australia's highest run-scorer not only in this World Cup, but in ODIs in 2023. Also, his strike rate of 120 in the powerplay in 2023 is his best in any year.

Hello and welcome!

Hello and welcome. It's Australia vs Netherlands in Delhi, which has been a high-scoring venue so far in this World Cup. Travis Head is set to return for Australia, so it will be interesting to see how they reshuffle. The likely answer is Head slots in at the top along with Warner, replacing Labuschagne, with Marsh and Smith moving down a spot each. It's an important game for Australia, who will need two points to stay within touching distance of the top three in the table, and to keep the chasing pack at bay.
But in their way stand Netherlands, who have already pulled an upset against big-hitting South Africa, and are part of the said chasing pack. A win today will see them join three other teams on four points from five games.
