Rob Quiney's unbeaten 45 nearly hauled Melbourne Stars over the finish line but they fell one run short of Brisbane Heat's target of 165 on Sunday.
Quiney, who had left the field due to a leg injury 12 overs into Stars' chase, returned with the side needing 46 from three overs. Tom Triffitt's wicket in the 18th over was another blow for the side but Quiney revived hopes by taking 21 runs off the penultimate over, smacking Andrew Flintoff for two sixes and a four. A six from Quiney helped bring the equation in the final over down from 16 off six to seven off three but Ryan Duffield, who rattled Stars' top-order and was named Man of the Match, managed to defend the runs.
Duffield's first three overs yielded 14 runs for three wickets as he dismissed Craig White and Glenn Maxwell off successive deliveries in the first over and followed it up with David Hussey's wicket in the fifth. Luke Wright's brisk 33 kept the scoreboard ticking despite the wickets but the 42-run stand between James Faulkner and Triffitt kept the chase moving along.
Earlier, Chris Lynn's 34-ball 48 anchored the Heat innings and the batsman shared promising stands with Simon Milenko and Nathan Reardon. Heat lost a few quick wickets before Flintoff and Ben Cutting provided a late boost with a 29-run, seventh-wicket partnership that came off just two overs.
