James Lillywhite, like his brother John, played for both Sussex and Middlesex as a fast roundarm bowler from 1850 to 1860, although with less success.

His more lasting contribution to the game was as the publisher of James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual, which ran between 1872 and 1900 and was, in its time, as prestigious and famous as Wisden. Edited throughout by Charles Alcock, from 1886 it incorporated John Lillywhite's Cricketer's Companion after the latter finished in 1885.
