James Leith was a member of the Cambridge side between 1846 and 1849, winning his Blue in 1848. In 1858 he won the VC for bravery during the Indian Mutiny. The report stated: "On April 1 at Betwa, Captain Need 14th Light Dragoons had become separated and found himself on difficult, rocky ground, surrounded by a large number of rebel infantry and fighting for his life. Despite his skill with the sword, his saddle, reins and clothing were slashed to ribbons by the enemy's tulwars, and he would certainly have been killed had not Lieutenant James Leith, 14th Light Dragoons charged alone and rescued him." He later served in the Persian Wars but was invalided out because of his failing health and he died aged only 43.
