David Smith was a right-hand top-order batsman who played regularly for Warwickshire between 1973 and 1985, passing 1000 runs four times. His best season was in 1980 when he made 1582 runs at 36.79 with two hundreds and 12 fifties. Oddly, as his first-class form slowly declined he became more proficient in the one-day game, and in his final season when he lost his place in the Championship side, he was a regular in the one-day team. He played one Youth Test, top scoring against West Indies with 41 in 1974. After retiring he was on the Warwickshire committee for nine years before becoming increasingly involved with Leicestershire, taking over as their chief executive in January 2008.
