Simon Jones went to hospital for an X-ray on his injured right ankle which restricted him to four overs in Australia's second innings. Jones showed obvious discomfort as he fielded the ball during the early part of the Australia's follow on and despite taking the new ball he soon left the field for treatment.
"He just mentioned yesterday he had a slight problem with his ankle," Duncan Fletcher, England's coach, told the BBC. "It was alright this morning and it got worse as the day progressed and we sent him off to hospital."
It was later announced that the X-ray had proved inconclusive and that Jones would wear a surgical boot overnight before being reassessed in the morning.
Jones has become an integral part of England's attack this summer and is their leading wicket-taker in the Ashes series with 18 wickets at 21 apiece after his five-wicket haul in the first innings.
The early part of Jones's international career was blighted by injuries, the most severe of which was when he had to have his knee reconstructed after sliding on the Brisbane outfield in the first Test of the the 2002-03 Ashes series.
