Profile

A talented all-round sportsman, Craig Evans did not make the most of his cricket abilities. A tall, strong, athletic figure, he was a scratch golfer and a rugby international for Zimbabwe, at fullback A powerful batsman and a medium-pace bowler, he appeared to be equally talented with bat and ball but seemed to lack the application and motivation to realise his potential. He played two forgettable Tests, two years apart, but is considered a one-day specialist.

He made his debut on October 25, 1992 and played his 53rd and final ODI a decade later. There should have been more highlights in that amount of time, but three wickets to help Zimbabwe beat Sri Lanka at Sharjah in 1998-99, and 96 not out - his highest international score - in Colombo in 1996 remain the moments he will tell his grandchildren. A recall to the squad for the 2003-04 Australian tour seemed to have given him another chance to prove his worth, but despite continued good form on the domestic first-class scene, Evans could still not find a place in the national side.
