Bangladesh committed exactly the errors they knew they needed to avoid - the same mistakes they committed against India - and lost their must-win match against Ireland. The chaotic batting prompted a withering assessment from an incensed coach Jamie Siddons, who, with captain Mohammad Ashraful alongside him, called it a "ridiculous" effort.
Siddons insisted after the loss to India that Bangladesh's players were not lacking in skill anymore but were being undone by faulty decision-making while batting. Similar errors against Ireland, he warned, would be dangerous. His advice went unheeded - too many Bangladesh batsmen fell because of poor shot selection.
Junaid Siddique, who began with two consecutive fours, skied a catch towards square leg. The captain Mohammad Ashraful offered a catch to first slip after being dropped at that position in the previous over. Shakib Al Hasan went for the big shot but failed to clear deep midwicket. His dismissal particularly disappointed Siddons who said the allrounder had been out "five times this tour" to the "same shot, same spot". Tamim Iqbal, who was batting fluently, was run out needlessly. Bangladesh lost five wickets inside the first ten overs and were restricted to 137, their lowest total since they arrived in England, warm-ups included.
The carelessness of their approach was perhaps best characterised by a shot Mushfiqur Rahim played in the 13th over. Bangladesh were struggling on 69 for 5 and Mushfiqur slogged the ball high in the air over midwicket. He was let off only because Trent Johnston couldn't get to the ball quickly enough, running backwards from inside the circle though the fielder on the boundary line, Boyd Rankin, should have probably called for it. It was precisely the sort of decision that led to Siddons publicly criticising his players during the post-match press conference.
"There's nothing we can do if they're going to keep making mental errors like that, the same mistakes over and over," Siddons said, while Ashraful was seated by his side. "We train for it, we talk about it, we do everything we can. Even Ash [Ashraful] made the same mistake. He hit the ball to the bloke the over before and went and did it again, saying 'catch me this time'. Five, six, maybe seven batsmen got out to ridiculous shots.
"We didn't make anywhere near enough runs, the par score there against any attack is 170. It's a flat wicket, fast outfield, a short boundary to one side. We had a reasonable start, we were 40 or 50 off the first six and from there 160 is [possible] if you bat sensibly to a plan, but if the boys just keep disobeying the plan you end up with a shitty little score like 130. I'm borderline disappointed and angry. I'm not sure which way to treat them when I speak to them in a minute."
The plan, as Ashraful revealed after the match, was for Bangladesh to try and score 60 during the Powerplay with their top-order batsmen - Tamim, Junaid and Ashraful - going after the bowling. If around two wickets fell, the plan was to try and score 60 off the next nine without loss. All the strategizing came to nothing as wickets fell in quick succession.
"Our boys, they get it their way a lot, they don't tend to listen too well. It's time some pressure is put on them to listen," Siddons said. "From the captain down, if they don't want to listen, well we've got to move on. They need to listen right from getting to the bus on time; you know they do it their own way a bit. We've come a long long way but we need to come a lot further."
Ashraful called it the "worst match they played on tour" and without a doubt it was. Bangladesh had a terrific opportunity to make the Super Eights, needing to beat only Ireland. On the day, however, the Associate's players kept their heads and sent the Full Member crashing out of the tournament.

Senior sub-editor After a major in Economics and nine months at a financial research firm, George realised that equity, capital and the like were not for him. He decided that he wanted to be one of those lucky few who do what they love at work. Alas, his prodigious talent was never spotted and he had to reconcile himself to the fact that he would never earn his money playing cricket for his country, state or even district. He jumped at the opportunity to work for Cricinfo and is now confident of mastering the art of office cricket.

In every team sucess what ever the game may be ,the captain and the coach part is necessary. But as for us bangladesh side concerned the coach doing the media manager part and the captain is acting like his deputy. After beating India in the worldcup they are thinking that they can beat India everytime ,they have forgotten this new Indian side talent and capablities.Just ask their coach to see the performance of the Indian team after that defeat. And tell him to say the truth that they can beat this Indian team on any given day with this Bangldesh team ,Please keep Ireland team in mind.
Posted by Nipun on (June 09 2009, 14:22 PM GMT)First of all,let me make it clear that I am not talking on the light of Bangladesh's defeat to Ireland.I have been shouting from the rooftops since 2005 that the Undeserved TEST STATUS tag needs to be removed from Bangladesh cricket. The ICC had committed a mistake no doubt, but by the way the ICC are going,it seems they don't know that mistakes can be rectified.I had said this even when Bangladesh won against India,I had said this when Bangladesh lost to Ireland previously. It's not a comment of anguish;it's a realisation that should have struck the ICC way,way ago. @Shafaet:-It's the fact that you are talking of 2 50+ scores for Ashraful that proves your hero is a Good For Nothing.Good cricketers are about consistency, about learning,& Ashraful had never learnt from his mistakes, has never learnt,& will never learn. In any case, his averages say everything.1 chancy, sloggy innings in 1 complete year is not something even Tailenders would be proud of.
Posted by Shafaet on (June 09 2009, 13:30 PM GMT)People are being too harsh on bangladesh. watch the performance of them in practise matches. bangladesh lost a T20 against ireland and you know t20 depends much on luck as Imran Khan said. On any other day the would've thrashed ireland, they whitewashed them in a recent series. all i have to say is publics memory is short. DO you remember ashraful's innings of 94 of 52 against england in england?? or 50 under 23 balls in a mine field in india? very few players could have played such innings. So please stop making silly comments.
Posted by mrgupta on (June 09 2009, 11:49 AM GMT)I have heard a lot of Bangladeshi players and also some others saying "On a given day the BD team can beat any team in the world"... the fact is that "Given Day" only comes once in an year or sometimes once in 2 years. If BD team really wants to be taken seriously then they have to be a team with the "Given day"coming atleast 5 times in an year.
Posted by Bang_La on (June 09 2009, 11:15 AM GMT)Siddons can NOT shrug off his own responsibility for Bangladesh humiliation in every match he was the coach. He should first explain his own capabilities and conduct as a coach. Since taking over as a coach, his attitude towards Bangladesh team was most dismissive and deregotary. We have not noticed a signle area where the players improved nor have seen them were taught how to learn from mistakes. Every game plan he made was fulty and fatal. Take this match. Why Mashrafe had to bat at 8? It looked like the game plan was made in Dhaka in advance and was never reviewed. Why Ashraful (lacks cricket sense just like the coach) was asked to hand the ball to a pacer when the spinners could somehow pushed teh asking rate to a competitive level? Simply put, if a student fails every subject in every examination, the teacher gets a sack. He should get a sack now.Despite what Shane Warne said about him, Siddon's failure to get a call for Australian team speaks of his quality as a cricketer. Adios.
Posted by khobornai on (June 09 2009, 11:15 AM GMT)looks like Bangladeshi cricketers are in England just to show that they can hit sixes only and not to win a game or put up a fight. There was an apparent competition between players on how quickly or ridiculously one can get out. Talent alone doesn't win a match. What's the use of having talent any way if people like Ashraful gets out every time after scoring few odd runs. Captain has to lead from the front. Team needs at least 20/30 runs from him which he couldn't make. I am really now confused. Is he the best batsmen in the Bangladeshi side ? Although Masrhrafi scored 33 against Ireland but he maintained his IPL bowling form by giving away plenty of runs during bowling which didn't help either. Bangladeshi players must come to sense and also realize that they are playing for a country and it's people
Posted by imi2839 on (June 09 2009, 11:13 AM GMT)i think it ws mere stupidity from ashraful, i think he is th one who is responsible for this defeat. his foolish shot, his persistence with rubel hussain (who i also think ws partly responsible against india and before tht to sri lanka in an ODI final) in th dying overs over th spinners shakib & razzak. its amazing how one can be so naiive. i m very disappointed.
Posted by _-_- on (June 09 2009, 10:11 AM GMT)If only Bangladesh had not spoken so much before the tournament and focussed on their cricket, they would have performed better. They spoke of beating India and reaching the semi-finals and now they have actually been convincingly beaten by Ireland. Its really disgraceful the way they went about things against the Irish and one can only hope that they let their game do the talking- in a consistent manner
Posted by mrgupta on (June 09 2009, 09:37 AM GMT)I am an Indian and honestly i felt at the start of the WC that India might face a tough challenge from BD team. It was partly because of the way they batted against the Aussies in warmup game where they scored 180+ runs, that was a good effort and they looked dangerous till that point. Then again while chasing against India, in the first match they looked good for few overs and then since then its the same old Story for them. This was not expected, but full credit to a great Ireland team who fought hard and Won. I think Ashraful will do better if they take away the Captaincy from him now.
Posted by NazmulHasan on (June 09 2009, 08:45 AM GMT)I am a Bangladeshi, all i want is now to sack Ashraful from the team as well as from captaincy. Also I want ICC to ban Bangladesh from any level of cricket. Seriously its just a joke, playing so many years in cricket this is just a disgusting performance. Not acceptable at all! Their mentality hasn't changed. so narrow the mentality and want to play shots. All i want is to sack Ashraful and bring another player as a captain and sack him, He is there for so many years doing nothing, we need change otherwise STOP playing cricket. Simply its disgusting, This cricket team is putting us down all the time.
