New Zealand win after Styris derails West Indies

Scott Styris bowled New Zealand to victory despite only two of their batsmen reaching double figures in their final warm-up match against West Indies in Guyana. West Indies appeared to be cruising in their chase of 125 as Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul put on an opening stand of 68, before they quickly lost all ten wickets for 49.

It was a disastrous finish for the home team, who had done well to restrict New Zealand when only Ross Taylor (50) and Jacob Oram, with 46 not out, adjusted to the slow pitch. Sulieman Benn took the new ball and was hard to get away, with 2 for 12 from his four overs, while Darren Sammy and Ravi Rampaul also collected two each.

While the ball was hard Gayle had few problems clearing the ropes and one if his four sixes went over the stands, but difficulties started after he missed a wild mow across the line at Oram. The lack of pace made Styris a dangerous weapon and he ran through the middle order with 4 for 18 with Ramnaresh Sarwan beaten by a lack of bounce and Narsingh Deonarine driving limply to mid off.

Shane Bond picked up Chanderpaul for 53 thanks to a fine catch at long on and only Andre Fletcher threatened to get West Indies home but he was the last man to depart, run out for 15 with eight runs still needed from three deliveries.

The only concern in the field for New Zealand was another costly performance from Daniel Vettori, who grabbed 2 for 46 from his four overs having also been expensive in their opening warm-up game. New Zealand kick off the tournament proper against Sri Lanka on Friday, before West Indies play Ireland later on the same day.
