Fifth Test Match

India v Pakistan

India, who won the toss for the only time in the series, came very near to ending the deadlock which has characterised the games between the countries for so long. Only a last-wicket stand of 38 between Mahmood Hussain and Mohammad Farooq saved Pakistan from defeat.

A fine century by Umrigar, his ninth in Test matches, helped India to a strong position in their first innings. The Pakistan batsmen, however, did not show similar confidence and struggled against the accurate fast bowling of Desai and the spin of Kumar. Mushtaq Mohammed reached a well-deserved century, but even his and Burki's efforts could not prevent Pakistan from having to follow on 177 behind.

In the second innings, Desai and Nadkarni (slow left-arm) again had Pakistan in difficulties, but the last pair, Mahmood Hassain and Farooq, added 38 and just managed to take the score beyond India's reach.
