At Madras, January 13, 14, 15, 17. Australia won by an innings and 55 runs to lead the series 2-1. They batted slowly on the first day and made 183 for three wickets. India's bowlers struck better form on the second day and dismissed four batsmen before lunch for the addition of 82 runs. Favell, 100 not out overnight, added only one to his score. MacKay, in a dour and tenacious innings of three and a half hours, acted as a sheet-anchor and when he was last out, Australia's total reached 342.

India began well and passed 100 for the loss of two wickets. Then a fine spell by Benaud, who turned his leg-breaks appreciably and dismissed four batsmen for seven runs, wrecked their hoped. Only the wicket-keeper, Kunderam, appeared confident and his 71 included twelve 4's.

Following-on 193 runs behind, India batted feebly. Again Benaud was mainly responsible for their failure. He captured three key wickets for 43 runs and finished with a match analysis of eight wickets for 86. He repeatedly changed the bowling, allowing the batsmen little opportunity to settle down. Kunderam alone took changes and his brisk 33 included six 4's. Contractor batted four hours for 41.
