Third Test Match

India v Australia

At Bombay, January 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. Drawn. India suffered a blow when Patel, their match-winning bowler of the second Test, reported sick on the morning of the match. They enjoyed better luck when Ramchand won the toss and gave them first use of a good pitch for batting.

Roy and Umrigar fell quickly to Davidson, but Contractor found a splendid partner in Baig, and they were not separated until the second day, having added 133. Contractor completed a solid century. Then the persistent pace of Davidson and Meckiff whittled away the rest of the innings.

Nadkarni, bowling his left-arm slows accurately, carried a heavy burden when Australia batted, for Umrigar sent down only a few overs because of back trouble, and Durani, replacement for Patel, could not bowl because of a cut finger. After Nadkarni had accounted for McDonald and Stevens, Harvey and O'Neill joined in a third-wicket partnership of 207. Both reached three figures, O'Neill batting six hours and Harvey four and three-quarter hours.

A determined opening partnership by Roy and Contractor, and more sound batting by Baig and Kenny, made India safe, and when they declared Australia had only twenty-five minutes in which to make 129 -- an impossible task.
