Pepsi Cup 1998-99, final

India v Pakistan

Toss: Pakistan.

Returning to Bangalore, the scene of their traumatic defeat by India in the 1996 World Cup, Pakistan took revenge by beating them for the seventh time running in a one-day game. Thanks to Shahid Afridi and Inzamam-ul-Haq, run out for 91 in a mix-up with Azhar Mahmood, they very nearly reached 300; only Prasad could contain them.

Something special was needed in India's reply, but their weakened line-up, still missing Azharuddin and Tendulkar, could not supply it. Ganguly played a reckless-looking shot, and Jadeja surprisingly held himself back to No. 5, after the inexperienced Khurasiya. Azhar Mahmood returned a career-best five for 38. Some Indian fans had already had enough at 48 for three in the tenth over, and started hurling water bottles on to the outfield.

Man of the Match: Azhar Mahmood. Man of the Series: S. C. Ganguly.
