A passionate, awe-inspiring display by Tendulkar kept India in the hunt for the Super Six. He had returned from his father's funeral in India the day before. And, when he came in at 92 for two, Bristol heard a roar from the crowd that probably startled the lions in the zoo. Tendulkar started carefully, but accelerated after each landmark: 50 came off 54 balls, 100 in 84. He flicked the last ball of the innings over mid-wicket for six - his third, in addition to 16 fours - to finish on 140 from 101 balls. It was his 22nd one-day international century, but the first when he was not opening. The stand of 237 in 29 overs with Dravid, who was in lovely touch while scoring a century (almost ignored), was the highest in World Cup history - until India's next match. It beat the 207, also against Kenya, by the Waughs in 1996.

Kenya's batsmen were so stunned that they failed to hit the boundary until the tenth over. But Tikolo guided them to respectability in a partnership of 118 with Otieno. In the absence of the injured Kumble and Prasad, Mohanty, swinging the ball both ways, was the pick of the bowlers. But the day belonged to Tendulkar, who dedicated his highest World Cup score to his father's memory.
