†ENGLAND v WEST INDIES 1986-87

At Devonport, February 3. England won by 29 runs. Richards' dismissal to his seventh ball, which he touched on to the stumps attempting to run Botham through the vacant slips, inspired a brilliant display of out-cricket which saw England home - and into the finals - with deceptive ease. Without Broad's measured 76 (142 balls) out of 158 for seven, England, put in, would not have had a target to defend, even though the seamers had a helpful pitch to bowl on and West Indies were without Haynes (dislocated finger) and Greenidge (damaged hamstring). Logie and Gomes added 46 for the third wicket to earn West Indies the advantage; but by dismissing Gomes - caught at leg slip - and Richards in successive overs, Botham swung the match. On five of the eight occasions on which Gatting changed the bowling, the man brought on took a wicket in the first over of his spell.

Man of the Match: B. C. Broad. Attendance: 9,848.
