†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1986-87

At Melbourne, February 1. Australia won by 109 runs. A solid opening by Marsh and Border, followed by an aggressive 93 by Jones, gave Australia, who were put in, a score England never looked like challenging. Jones, facing 100 balls, won a critical tactical point with a successful assault on Emburey, who was taken out of the attack after his first three overs had gone for 25. Waugh, who helped Jones add 69 off ten overs for the fifth wicket, signed off in style with three successive fours off Gatting, scoring his 49 not out off 36 balls. Botham, promoted to open, made a disciplined 45 off 87 balls, but nobody supported him. Broad, Gower and Gatting fell to loose strokes, while Lamb, over-committing himself as non-striker, was run out for the third time in succession at the bowler's end, having been sent back.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 58,580.
