At Melbourne, January 30 (day/night). West Indies won by six wickets. England, winning the toss, compounded the problems of an uneven pitch when Broad ran out Lamb and Gatting was bowled by Harper, making room to force his second ball square on the off side. Holding's swooping caught and bowled from Botham, taken at the expense of a damaged hamstring within a few feet of the batsman, wrecked England's prospects of recovery, and only Emburey's determination extended the innings until the 49th over. West Indies were lucky to lose only one early wicket against fine bowling by Small and DeFreitas. Richards, however, took command after nearly playing on in Emburey's first over, and when 21 became the first batsman to score 5,000 runs in one-day international cricket.
