†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1986-87

Lamb struck Reid for 2, 4, 6, 2, 4 in the final over to blast England to a tremendous win with a ball to spare. Although the pitch lacked pace, Australia, who chose to bat first, should have scored more than 233 for eight after passing 150 in the 33rd over. Wellham played deftly (154 balls, five fours), but Australia lost momentum, adding only 43 in the last ten overs. England's innings followed a similar pattern, Broad's 45 coming off 58 balls and Gower and Lamb adding 86 off twenty overs. However, a clever spell by Matthews, supported by good fielding, left England needing 32 off three, 25 off two and 18 off the final over. Lamb, who until then had been at logger-heads with his timing and had not hit a boundary, was equal to the task, hauling Reid twice to square leg and once over deep mid-wicket.

Man of the Match: A. J. Lamb. Attendance: 36,463.
