Postponed for a day because of heavy rain, it was curtailed to 30 overs a side after the captains expressed their preference for a game rather than sharing the points for a no result. Boon's 87 from 87 balls laid the foundation for an Australian total that was to set New Zealand a target of 6.66 an over. He and Jones (49 balls) added 117 from 98 balls against some indifferent slow bowling, and Border improvised to score 34 off 26 balls. Wright and Rutherford sparked New Zealand's reply, putting on 83 in twelve overs, and with Martin Crowe on 58 from 46 balls, they began the final over requiring 7 runs with four wickets in hand. Crowe departed to Waugh's first ball, misjudging the length and lofting it to deep cover; the next ball, a yorker, sent back Smith. For New Zealand, it was all over. Waugh, the last-over hero against India, allowed only 3 singles and ran out Snedden.
