At Perth, February 2. West Indies won by 82 runs, so becoming the first team to win all its matches in the preliminary round of a WSC tournament. Put in by Mendis, they started with the stated intention of attempting to beat Australia's record total of 323 for two set the previous weekend against Sri Lanka but fell just short. Gomes's first hundred in a one-day international included his first 6 hit for West Indies in an international match and he had three in all, along with six 4s, as Sri Lanka went to pieces in the field. The left-handed Silva's 85 from 96 balls was the feature of Sri Lanka's innings.
