At Leeds, June 11, 12. West Indies won by 101 runs. Though West Indies, put in when play started on a damp day at 3.30, lost three wickets for 32 in nine overs to Lawson and Hogg, they were comfortably placed when the day's play ended at 160 for five after 42 overs, a stand of 76 between Gomes and Bacchus having won back the initiative. Next morning West Indies extended their score to 252 for nine, after which Australia's batsmen were soon in trouble. A ball from Holding lifted sharply from an unpredictable pitch, which was criticised by both captains, and came back to hit Wood on the side of the head. He was taken to hospital with severe concussion. Wessels and Hughes were out for 55, and though Hookes and Yallop took Australia swiftly to 114 for two, adding 59 in eight overs, Australia collapsed to a new, young fast bowler, Winston Davis. One of the replacements for the injured Garner and Marshall, Davis took six of the last seven wickets at a personal cost of 14 runs.
