NEW ZEALAND v AUSTRALIA 1981-82

At Auckland, February 13. New Zealand won by 46 runs. Australia were well beaten, despite a century by Chappell. Although New Zealand had some luck, with Edgar being given not out when 7, and the Australian innings ending in poor light, it was an assertive performance by the home side. With one-third of their 50 overs bowled, they had scored only 37, but Chappell and a strangely ineffective Lillee yielded 113 runs from their twenty overs as New Zealand's fortunes revived. Australia soon left New Zealand's scoring-rate behind. Chappell, after a diffident start, batted magnificently, but Border's dismissal in the 40th over began a collapse, Australia losing their last six wickets in as many overs. Chappell was given a mixed reception when he led his team out, and when he came out to begin his own innings, an ebonite wood, as in bowls, was sent from the fence across the turf. The noisy crowd delayed the progress of the game and spectators persisted in invading the ground at the fall of every Australian wicket, which detracted from the enjoyment of one of New Zealand's most exciting cricket days.
