Second One-day International

†SRI LANKA v ENGLAND 1981-82

Another capacity crowd of 22,000 saw their side avenge the previous day's defeat when England, needing 14 off the last two overs, lost four of their remaining five wickets to run-outs and the last to a skied catch. Having elected to field, England could have won the match in the first hour if even half the balls that beat the bat had found the edge. However, Sidath Wettimuny, younger brother of Sunil who played in Kandy, battled through and went on to pace the innings with skill and opportunism. With five wickets down and needing 46 at nearly 9 an over. England looked beaten until Fletcher and Gatting together plundered 34 off an over apiece from the de Silvas. Then victory was suddenly there for the taking.

Man of the Match: S. Wettimuny.
