†SRI LANKA v ENGLAND 1981-82

At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, February 13. England won by 5 runs. Sri Lanka's loss of three wickets for 8 runs in the middle of their innings prevented them from achieving their target, although a stand of 68 at 6 an over between Madugalle and Ranasinghe kept them in the game, and some strong hitting by the tail sustained interest until the final over. Earlier the home side had been let down by their fielding when, after putting England in, they missed Gooch three times - the first left-handed by wicket-keeper Jayasekera off De Mel's first ball. Gooch went on to share in a third-wicket stand with Botham that at one time produced 43 in five overs, but England's later batting disintegrated and, on a sun-baked, close-cropped outfield, their final score was disappointing.

Man of the Match: I. T. Botham.
