At Nottingham, June 11. England won by 80 runs. Turner, the New Zealand captain, must have been well pleased with his gamble of putting England in to bat in a heavy atmosphere when Collinge, bowling well, disposed of the openers, Amiss and Jameson, by the time the total had reached 28. That was the end of New Zealand's early progress as the sun blazed down, for Fletcher and Hayes mastered the bowling in a pleasing stand of 83. The longer he batted the more audacious Fletcher became and his century came in the 55th over. After useful stands with Denness and Old, Fletcher was run out off the last ball of the innings, his 131 including thirteen 4's. In the last five overs 53 runs were added.

New Zealand made England work hard for success without ever looking likely to create a surprise. They were jolted by the early departure of Turner and despite a plucky 55 by Morrison the innings ended in the 60th over with England the complete masters. Greig, with his medium paced deliveries, was the most successful bowler, his four victims costing him 45 runs. There was never any doubt that the Man of the Match award belonged to the masterful Fletcher.
