The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has announced an umpiring-exchange programme whereby an official from the Caribbean will be employed for England's first-class season next year. In addition, an English umpire will officiate in the Caribbean's forthcoming season.

The proposal, suggested by Tony Howard, WICB's chief cricket operations officer, is intended to aid Caribbean officials who "were at a disadvantage when it comes to international appointments because of a lack of exposure and experience". The idea, presented to the ICC at their annual meeting in Dubai last month, has been accepted and welcomed.

"We see this as an excellent opportunity to promote cricket umpiring as a career in the Caribbean," Howard told the board's website.

The exchange programme will be an on-going exercise and the WICB is exploring further opportunities with Australia and Bangladesh.
