Carib Beer Series, 5th round, 1st day Chanderpaul's unbeaten 161 spurs Guyana March 7, 2008
Guyana 338 for 4 (Chanderpaul 161*, Johnson 94) v Combined Campuses and Colleges Shivanarine Chanderpaul struck a majestic unbeaten 161 off 201 balls, including 13 fours and a six to lead Guyana's run fest against the Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Provindence Stadium. He was given support by Leon Johnson, who made 94 off 171 balls, before he added a further 102 runs in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand with Travis Dowlin (31*). Guyana had a wretched start earlier in the day, when Jamal Noel, the 23-year-old seamer from Barbados, removed Krishna Arjune and Ramnaresh Sarwan before a run was scored. But Sewnarine Chattergoon turned the tide Guyana's way with an attacking 56-ball 38 before falling half-an-hour before lunch. Johnson made his way to 32 by lunch, while Chanderpaul was more circumspect, scoring five runs off the first 20 deliveries that he faced. But Chanderpaul switched gears after the interval; bringing up his half-century off only 61 balls. In the mean time, Johnson reached fifty with a cover drive off left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh. Chanderpaul lofted a six over long-on to bring up Guyana's 150, before Johnson fell six runs short of a hundred when he chasing a wide one. Chanderpaul, though, carried on, bringing up his 43rd first-class hundred off 133 deliveries, before piling on some quick runs with Dowlin.
Jamaica 149 for 7 (Hyatt 47, Collins 4-35) trail Barbados 167 (Edwards 40, Bernard 5-44) by 18 runs Pedro Collins, the Barbados left-arm seamer, took three late wickets to leave Jamaica at 149 for 7, still 19 runs adrift of taking the first-innings lead during their match at the Kensington Oval. Earlier, medium-pacer David Bernard's 5 for 44 enabled Jamaica to bowl out Barbados for 167 after putting them in. Jamaica lost Brenton Parchment on the first ball of their innings when he was bowled by Collins, before Chris Gayle was dismissed for 13. They slumped to 62 for 3 when Xavier Marshall, who scored 27 while batting for over an hour, was caught at midwicket off Suleiman Benn. Danza Hyatt and Brendon Nash (23) set about reconstructing the innings by adding 61 runs for the fourth wicket, but Barbados struck back when Collins dismissed the two within the space of four balls, before forcing an edge from Carlton Baugh, who fell without scoring. Earlier, Barbados had the terrible start, going in to lunch at 65 for 5. They lost opener Jason Haynes early on when he was caught behind off Jerome Taylor. Patrick Brown and Dale Richards (38) appeared to be settling in, but once Brown was caught at second slip while fending a short delivery from Daren Powell, Barbados lost four wickets for the addition of 23 runs. After lunch, Bernard removed Kevin Stoute and Benn in quick time to have Barbados reeling at 98 for 7. But some late-order hitting from Fidel Edwards, who hit a career-best 40, pushed them past the 150-run mark.
Windward Islands 272 for 8 (James 60*, Smith 52, Jaggernauth 3-66) v Trinidad and Tobago Lyndon James and Devon Smith scored half-centuries as Windwards scored 272 for 8 in their encounter against Trinidad at the Windsor Park Stadium. James was unbeaten on 60 when stumps were drawn after adding 61 runs for the ninth wicket with Deighton Butler, who scored 25 not out. After a slight delay due to rain, Windwards lost Miles Bascombe early when he was caught behind off Ravi Rampual for 12. But they were spurred on by Smith and Andre Fletcher (19), who added 44 runs for the second wicket. Windwards' innings slipped into decline after lunch when the spinners were brought in, losing three wickets for 38 runs. Fletcher was the first to go, trapped by left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed. Amit Jaggernauth, the offspinner, then claimed two quick wickets; he trapped Smith with one that kept low before inducing a loose stroke from Darren Sammy, who hit a full toss straight to Kieron Powell. By the time Liam Sebastien was run out for 11, Windwards had slipped to 110 for 5. Donwell Hector scored 43 and added 45 runs for the fifth wicket with captain Rawl Lewis (19), to lead Windward's resistance. Another flurry of wickets saw Windwards slip to 209 for 8, before James and Butler stuck it out in the middle to ensure that there was no further damage. © Cricinfo
