West Indies cricket lurches from one precipitous state to another, with the news that the board (WICB) has sacked the coach, John Dyson, ahead of the forthcoming Champions Trophy.
Dyson departs after West Indies' calamitous Test and one-day series defeats to Bangladesh. West Indies fielded a severely depleted team following a dispute between the WICB and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) over contracts, during which the majority of leading players declined to nominate for selection.
"At the moment I don't wish to talk," Dyson said when contacted by Cricinfo on Thursday.
Dyson will be temporarily replaced by David Williams, the assistant coach. Williams has never hidden his ambition to become the side's full-time mentor, having previously expressed his dissatisfaction at the appointment of Dyson, the former Australia batsman and Sri Lanka coach, over a West Indian candidate.
Dyson assumed the post in 2007 from another Australian, Bennett King, but was almost immediately in the bad books of West Indies fans when he couldn't attend their series against Zimbabwe. His appointment came hot on the heels of Jeff Dujon's less than ringing endorsement of cricket in the region, when he said "no coach in the world can help West Indies".
Nevertheless, Dyson made a positive start when West Indies beat South Africa at Port Elizabeth - their first Test victory since May 2005, and first outside of the Caribbean in seven years. The Windies amassed a Test record of three wins, seven draws and nine defeats during his tenure - culminating in four straight losses to England and Bangladesh - and a 9-25 win-loss ratio in the one-day international arena. They lost nine of their final 10 completed 50-over matches against England, India and Bangladesh.
The West Indians fared better in the 20-over format, advancing to the semi-final of the World Twenty20 in June. But perhaps their greatest achievement under Dyson was their 1-0 Test series victory over England in February; a result that secured them the Wisden Trophy for the first time since 1998.
The feel-good factor did not last. After the ECB and WICB hastily arranged a Test and ODI series in England, Dyson was left with a disgruntled squad, several of whom yearned to be playing in the lucrative IPL. Chris Gayle prolonged his stay with Kolkata Knight Riders until the eve of the Lord's Test, while Dwayne Bravo was absent from both Test matches while plying his trade for Mumbai Indians.
In addition to Dyson's sacking, the manager, Omar Khan, has been replaced by Lance Gibbs for the Champions Trophy due to the "special circumstances" of the tour. West Indies are also sending a shadow side to South Africa in September despite the main players saying they were available for selection.

So let me get this straight, Dyson is the fallguy for the miscalculation of handing England one of their few successes in the Caribbean, then give the reasons of losing a home series against Bangladesh. Under Dyson, they won a test match in South Africa, a feat that was never done before. Had beaten England in a home test series since 1998 and got to the Semi-Finals of the 20/20 World Cup in England. I must be missing something, because last time i checked, it wasn't the Coach that picked that makeshift amateur Club Team, but the Selectors, whose hand was forced by you guessed it, the WICB!!! At this rate the majority of first choice players will play in the IPL and will be offered Kolpak Contracts. So thank you Board-members, for effectively killing West Indies Cricket. I don't blame the Trinis for wanting to go it alone after dealing with these bunch of unreasonable showponies.

Posted by INDIKAOPC on (August 15 2009, 09:11 AM GMT)I am a Sri Lankan who played little bit of division cricket and when we grew up our hero's were all West Indians. This was the trend with most of the Sri Lankans back then and it's so sad to see what has happened to West Indies Cricket at present. How come WICB can't find any genuine person to run this organization? This we have seen for the past 15-20 years. West Indies have produced so many great Cricketers and characters and we are wondering what has happen to them. Also it was so pathetic to see a second string team enter in to a test series which had no interest to the viewing public at all. This is utter rubbish. I think it's time to get together with people like Garry Sobers/Viv Richards/Clive Lloyd/Michael Holding/Brian Lara and many who can make a difference and start all over again. All these names which I mentioned are legends and respected people who has done wonders to WI Cricket as well as to world cricket. So it's high time that someone open the eyes and do something
Posted by AceB on (August 15 2009, 03:04 AM GMT)I can't see what all the fuss is about , everoone knows what the problem is. Fact is turkeys don't vote for christmas .So the WICB , this shameless bunch, of incompetants will be there forever unless caribbean people turn their collective mind to getting rid of this scourge....
Posted by Frocktail on (August 15 2009, 00:59 AM GMT)Damn if you do, damn if you don't. WICB in the interest of West Indies cricket are trying to sort things out with the resources that are available to them. Give them some sort of credit for standing up for something. If you cannot stand for something you will FALL for anything. Gayle and the players are placed exactly where they ought to be. They have no respect for the board and us fans. WICB is in charge and until the players are put in charge they must fulfill their commitment to West Indies cricket. We all say we want a local West Indian coach. Now their is one in place some of us are still not satisfied. You just cannot please all the people all the time but you can sure please some of the people some of the times.
Posted by sboyce on (August 14 2009, 22:29 PM GMT)Interviewed after the last Ashes test, Richie Benaud in reply to a question about crowd behaviour towards Ricky Ponting said that cricket reflected the society. I have said repeatedly, often talked over when I tried to make the point, to fellow West Indians, that in the West Indies people are paid by label rather than by results. Lawyer, doctor, artisan or labourer, the attitude is the same and if you expect 11 citizen cricketers from that environment to perform above the norm, it won't happen, it's a societal affliction. When West Indians criticize the team, the majority of us need to take a good look at the reflection we see in the mirror.
Posted by kaddy64 on (August 14 2009, 21:55 PM GMT)Heres the funny thing... Dyson is not sacked for making a mistake by calling the players off the field or by losing a series in England just after they had regained the Wisden Trophy. He is sacked for being given a bunch of useless cricketers and a captain who couldnt hold a bat if his life depended on it, losing a Test & ODI series to Bangladesh..... I think its time the WICB turn off the lights and close the door behind themselves... I am sick of them.
Posted by mohamedamin on (August 14 2009, 17:25 PM GMT)West Indies cricket is in a sad state now. I strongly believe that unless the current management of the board is sacked, we would be reading disappointing news everyday. Sending a 4th string team to the champions trophy is a total disgrace to the people of the Caribbean. Also not selecting the best team for the South Africa tour is more embarrassment. I wouldnt be surprised if that tour is cancelled by Cricket South Africa. We the Caricom and all Heads of Government of the Caribbean sit back and take whats going on in W I cricket. This is total shame. And if the WICB continue these shameful acts, soon we will be strip of Test and one day status. I think if the stars are not selected for the SA tour, then they should start thinking of forming their own team. The support will be there from the fans.
Posted by LeoAnn on (August 14 2009, 16:51 PM GMT)The W. I. Cricket is going through one of its most difficult period. This is made worse by the way WIPA has been allowed to operate. I am one who is of the view that the recent demonstration by the Cricketers has only served to positively impact W. I.'s Cricket: -The stance by the West Indies Cricket not to continue to entertain the attitude of the striking cricketers who only sought to hold W. I.'s Cricket at ransom. -The withdrawal of T&T Cricket from the annual Board meeting, which will now force the Board to act upon the Patterson' Report - The exposure being brought about WIPA being T&T centered, and that the WIPA's president is personally benefiting from the players intellectual right. it is also quite interesting that some persons very close to the game who believe that is carrying out personal grudge against West Indies Cricket Board. Whatever happens, it is my recommendation: - The Board act urgently on Patterson recommendation -WIPA executive resign -Players declare commitmen
Posted by motivated on (August 14 2009, 16:12 PM GMT)Greetings WI fans, I've just registered and to be quite honest, i've long said the WICB have been working for the enemy! How the heck they retained Dyson when he threw the match away against England is beyond me, then to top it off, accept a short notice limited tour, as if WI just come and has no history! Let me remind the dumbed down, i can't see clearly now crew, WI still has the world record for remaining unbeaten, if i am not mistaken, it stands at 29 matches straight! Personally the WICB board should be sacked, because someone has to inform me as to why Brian Lara was kicked out, as Sir Vivian Richards has said, "he was pushed"! If that decision was the boards, then i want them named and shamed, as i recall Brian saying he was giving up One day cricket to focus on his test career, where he had ambitions of making at least 12 double centuries. Now for some jerk to push the scourge of the English bowlers at the eve of a test series, was madness! The WICB was wrong & wrong x2
