The two best things about the tournament were that the two best teams got to the finals and Australia, who have been the dominant team throughout the competition, were dominant in the finals. They were dominant thanks to Adam Gilchrist - he came in and played the innings of his life. He had struggled a bit for form throughout the tournament. He was hitting the ball alright, but not making big scores. Today he rectified everything with a magnificent innings of 149, which is the highest score in a World Cup final.

He absolutely blitzed the Sri Lankan bowling. The Australians do this all the time, they go out and attack from the outset. That forces the bowling side on to the defensive, where they start to think more about containment than getting wickets. Once the Australians have got the opposition in that frame of mind, they really do put them to the sword. Gilchrist hit 13 fours and eight sixes in his magnificent innings and went on to score 149. He got off to a good start with Matthew Hayden, they really got right on top of the attack, and there was a good contribution from Ponting, but really it was all about Gilchrist.

The game was reduced to 38 overs because of the rain and Australia set a target of 282, which was virtually the same as what Sri Lanka had set in their 50 overs in the semi-final. Sri Lanka, after losing Upul Tharanga early, matched the Australians for a while with Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara. It was Jayasuriya who got things started and Sangakkara chipped in. Jayasuriya hit nine fours and Sangakkara hit six, but they just couldn't quite keep it up. They had a very good partnership, taking the score to 123 before Sangakkara was out. He was dismissed by Brad Hogg, who has been very good for Australia throughout the tournament and once again he got a crucial wicket.

With the rain coming and the Duckworth-Lewis equation looming, Jayasuriya tried to hit Michael Clarke out of the ground, but he was bowled and that really was the end for Sri Lanka. The game finished sadly amid farcical circumstances, with the Australian players starting to celebrate and then being told that the match wasn't finished. It really summed up the tournament. The tournament didn't have much go right for it and it seemed to be doomed from the time of Bob Woolmer's sad murder.

The Australians lifted the trophy for the third time in a row and they haven't lost a World Cup match for 29 games. Ricky Ponting has captained Australia 22 times at the World Cup and he hasn't yet suffered defeat. The Australians are a very good side, but I don't think any side is that unbeatable and that's an indictment on the rest of the world. But the Australians dominated right throughout the tournament and right till the end.
