World Twenty20, 2009
Wisden's review of England v India, World Twenty20, 2009
15-Apr-2010
At Lords, June 14 (floodlit). England won by three runs. England 2 pts. Toss: India.
India's astonishing decision to promote to No. 4 Ravindra Jadeja, a 20-year-old left-arm
spinning all-rounder, ahead of three of the finest strikers in contemporary cricket cost them
this match and their title as World Twenty20 champions. When Jadeja was dismissed by
the third ball of the 14th over, Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan had to score 69
from 39 balls, and the fact that they hit 11 off the last three balls made the finish look
closer than it was. Earlier, Pietersen underlined his value by making a brisk 46, but
England looked like adding another defeat to those by the Netherlands and South Africa
until Harbhajan Singh fired five wides down the leg side past Dhoni from what should
have been the last balls of both the 18th and 20th overs, and gave them something to bowl
at. England then borrowed the West Indian plan of pitching short against India's
inexperienced top order, and made the elevation of Jadeja - 24 runs off 23 balls in his two
previous Twenty20 internationals - all the more curious. India, the holders and pre-
tournament favourites, were out. If England could beat West Indies, they would reach the
semis. Collingwood later said being booed by Indian supporters had done his motivational
speech for him.
