England continued their up-and-down time by being thoroughly outplayed by South Africa, who lived up to their billing as tournament favourites in a clinical display. England's bright new opening pair were swept away in the first 11 balls, then in the sixth over Morkel made a crucial breakthrough when Pietersen cracked a full toss uppishly to mid-on, where van der Merwe caught it with a salmon leap. Morkel came off after that solitary over, the first maiden of the tournament, but had done his job. Only Shah stayed for long, and he was also the only batsman to clear the ropes: England's last six managed 25 runs (and one four) between them. South Africa made leisurely progress towards their undemanding target, only Kallis scoring at better than a run a ball, but the result was never in doubt. Just about the only bright spot for England came when Rashid made one turn and bounce on de Villiers, resulting in a slick slip catch for Collingwood.
