De Kock's imperious 178 from 113 balls made a mockery of Australia's 294. It was the second highest one-day score for South Africa, behind Gary Kirsten's undefeated 188 against the UAE at the 1996 World Cup, and the highest by anyone in South Africa, beating Herschelle Gibbs's 175 during the famous chase against the Australians at Johannesburg in March 2006.

Having witnessed much of the innings from the non-striker's end, stand-in captain du Plessis declared: "Quinton played one of the best one-day knocks you will ever see." South Africa were fearing a tougher challenge after Australia raced to 88 for one in 12 overs. Phehlukwayo's first had gone for 16, but he trusted his slower balls, and removed Finch and Smith in his second to stall progress; following his debut against Ireland five days earlier, he now finished with four for 44. The innings spluttered to 192 for six in the 29th over, but Bailey and Hastings ensured South Africa would not have it easy.

Instead, de Kock and Rossouw - replacing Hashim Amla, who was ill - carted 145 from the first 17 overs. And, when Rossouw was trapped by Zampa for a 45-ball 63, de Kock grew more savage, slamming 94 of the 123 he put on with du Plessis. Though he fell aiming for his 12th six, he had all but completed the rout.
