New Zealand v Australia, 2015-16

Wisden's review of the third ODI, New Zealand v Australia, 2015-16

15-Apr-2017
At Hamilton, February 8, 2016 (day/night). New Zealand won by 55 runs. Toss: Australia.
A foot injury ruled out Santner, who had collected 80 unbeaten runs and five cheap wickets in the first two games, but his replacement was leg-spinner Sodhi, and the change did New Zealand no harm. McCullum had begun his farewell one-day international on 197 sixes, and - as if there was any doubt - reached 200 while slashing 47 from 27 balls; only Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chris Gayle had beaten him to it. Guptill and Elliott made fifties but, on a tacky, slowing surface, New Zealand's last six fell for 23 in five overs. Australia's seamers shared nine wickets, while Zampa again played an important containing role. Khawaja's serene strokeplay carried them to 75 for one in the 12th over but, when Bracewell had him caught behind, the innings stalled.
The tall Sodhi bowled with bounce and turn, conceding seven from his first three overs, then removing Smith and Maxwell in three balls. Henry ended Bailey's resistance to leave Australia 153 for five, before controversially snaring Marsh, who drove a ball into his own boot and was given out, caught and bowled, on referral after the umpires glimpsed a replay on the big screen. What looked a simple chase now fell apart: Australia lost their last six for 38, and Seddon Park was covered in metallic blue confetti as a champion left one form of the game on a high. New Zealand celebrated their first one-day series win over Australia since 2006-07.
Man of the Match: I. S. Sodhi.
