England v Pakistan, 2016

Wisden's review of the second ODI, England v Pakistan, 2016

Julian Guyer
15-Apr-2017
At Lord's, August 27. England won by four wickets. England 2pts. Toss: Pakistan.
Sarfraz Ahmed became the first Pakistani to score a one-day international hundred at Lord's, but a lack of runs again proved his side's undoing. Sarfraz's century was chiselled from the adversity of two for three, after Azhar Ali had chosen to bat on a cloudy morning. Woakes and Buttler combined to remove both Sami Aslam, caught down the leg side on review despite questionable evidence, and Azhar himself; Sharjeel Khan was bowled by an excellent delivery from Wood that cut in sharply.
But Sarfraz, whose only previous hundred in the format had come against Ireland during the 2015 World Cup, defied the bowlers with largely conventional strokeplay, if unconventional footwork that aggressively challenged their lengths. He completed a 124-ball century when he glanced Plunkett for his sixth four, and no one could begrudge him his roar of delight. Imad Wasim made a combative, career-best unbeaten 63, but received little support from the tail. Mohammad Amir bowled Roy with the second ball of the reply, and Hales followed cheaply. But a third-wicket partnership of 112 between Root, who had shaken off a collision in the field with Rashid while catching Hasan Ali, and Morgan - ending a run of 23 international innings without a fifty - reasserted England's control. Stokes's brutal 30-ball 42 put the result beyond doubt. In the 36th over, Hasan became the first bowler to be no-balled by the third official under an ICC trial system, when, with a vibrating pager, Simon Fry alerted Marais Erasmus.
Man of the Match: J. E. Root.
