In a frenetic burst, New Zealand crumpled from 125 for 0 to 140 for 4, after which a spirited 69-run partnership between Daniel Vettori and Martin Guptill breathed life back into the innings.
New Zealand owed plenty to Vettori, as he bound the innings together after the middle order failed to cash in on an explosive start. He showed the stomach for battle and led the way with an attacking innings. Thriving in the company of Guptill, he found the gaps with ease and the duo stepped up.
Vettori took on Lasith Malinga early, slapping a six over third man and playing some delicate shots off Sanath Jayasuriya. He finally ended on 48 off 44 balls, hitting four fours and six en route.
He was on song during the reply as well and didn't allow the game to slip. He sent back Thilan Samaraweera, and by placing five men inside the ring he applied pressure on Thilina Kandamby, who was run out in the 25th over. He would later apply the final nail in the coffin, slipping one past Mahela Jayawardene and bowling him for 77.
