South Africa v West Indies

15-Apr-2003
At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, December 19 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 34 runs (D/L
method). Toss: Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka finally clinched a conclusive victory in a fluctuating contest. Jayasuriya hit a bruising
64 and shared fifty partnerships with Gunawardene and Atapattu. Beginner's luck ran out for
Brown, who conceded 72, but Sri Lanka were checked by the steady off-spin of Hooper and
Gayle. The last ten overs yielded just 58, and there were three run-outs, including Jayawardene
for a 65-ball 63. Rain during the break adjusted West Indies' target to 247 from 47 overs. Zoysa's
first cost 17, and Gayle and Ganga put on 111, the best opening stand of the tournament, by the
halfway mark. But Dharmasena bowled Ganga, for his fourth fifty in five games, and Gayle
followed three overs later. A power failure then caused a further brief interruption; resuming, West
Indies could not make headway against the spinners on a turning pitch without the injured Lara,
and Sri Lanka never threatened to loosen their grip.
