As if tired of tight finishes, South Africa won convincingly after Kemp, with 57 from 36 balls,
put the target beyond England's reach in a decisive climax to the first innings. Gibbs continued
to relish his move down the order, completing his 14th one-day international hundred, from 114
balls, having added 143 for the third wicket with Kallis. For Ali, the hero four days earlier, this
was a chastening experience, as his last two overs went for 36 runs, after he had conceded only
11 in his first six. But the performance of Harmison provided greater concern for England. The
day before, he admitted he would rather have gone home after the Test series and now, recovered
from a calf problem, he was not trusted for more than three overs in a spell. In contrast, Ntini,
enjoying a good series, and Pollock made early inroads into the England innings, assisted by some
loose driving. And when Pietersen succumbed attempting a third successive six against Boje the
entertainment as well as the contest was over.
