How many lbws equal a dismissal?

19-Dec-2008

West Indies was an interesting trip always. The Supertests during the 1978-79 tour there were full of incidents. There were riots at just about all of the five matches in the series.
We hadn't won a game going into the third Test, in Port-of-Spain, and were desperate to get back into the series. West Indies were chasing about 300 to win in the fourth innings when Ian Chappell brought me on to clean them up.
The batsman was Albert Padmore. The very first ball I bowled to him hit his pads and would've knocked out all three stumps, but he was given not out. The next ball hit him on the pads again, but that was given not out as well. Third ball, same thing. The sequence continued for the rest of the over - not out, not out, not out.
My eyes were rolling around like a pinball machine on special as I walked towards Padmore at the end of the over. Ian saw it and probably feared another riot.
"Albert," I said, " 'Padmore' is exactly the right surname for you." And then I walked down to fine leg.
I had the last laugh, though, when I finally got him bowled. He was the last man out and we won the match to square the series.
