Mike Atherton is England's only player in the top ten of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Ratings after England's crushing defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka at Galle. Marcus Trescothick has climbed 22 places to 39th, but for the rest of the England players it is a question of how far they have dropped. Atherton is down two places in the Ratings to ninth. Nasser Hussain has dropped out of the top 30, while Giles and White are out of the top 40. Graeme Hick, 55th in the batting, is at his lowest Rating since 1993.
Mahela Jayawardene, the highest rated of the Sri Lankan batsmen, has moved up to tenth in the batting. Muttiah Muralitharan remains fourth in the bowling.

Don Bradman, whose death was announced today, achieved the best Rating of any player in the history of Test cricket. His peak of 959 points came in 1934, but an indicator of his greatness is that his Rating was above 900 points for more than half of his career. It is rare for any player to reach 900 points in the Ratings, and even those who make it (Waugh, Lara, Pollock) rarely stay there for long. Except for one Test in 1932, Bradman would have been Number One in the Ratings continuously from 1931 until his retirement in 1948.
