Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler got Mumbai off to a flier, with a 43-run opening stand from just 3.6 overs, and Jasprit Bumrah eventually forced a narrow win in a tense tiebreaker against Gujarat - the first of the season - in the Indian Twenty20 competition at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on Saturday.
Mumbai needed to score at just over seven from the onset in their pursuit of a respectable 154, and Patel - in particular - laid into the Gujarat bowlers early with a boundary-hitting frenzy. Buttler contributed just 9 runs to the partnership, but he didn't have scope to do much more as Patel tore into the Gujarat took the early initiative.
He smashed Basil Thampi for three fours in first over of the chase, before thumping James Faulkner for two more in the next. Irfan Pathan was swatted 16 runs in the third over. The attacking display provided the momentum and platform for Mumbai to inch closer to the target. Following Patel's dismissal, in the 14th over, Mumbai crumbled and managed to tie the match. In the tense tiebreaker that followed, Mumbai managed just 11, with Kieron Pollard hitting a four and a six, but Bumrah held his nerve, and conceded just six runs to put Mumbai at par with Kolkata at the top of the table.
